Makeup with skincare benefits is a growing category, often with foundation or other complexion products. But eyeshadow? That's the hook with IT Cosmetics' Superhero Eye Transforming Anti-Aging Super Palette. Although it has some good qualities, it doesn't exactly leap tall buildings in a single bound when it comes to having anything to do with anti-aging claims.

This 12-shade, fragrance-free palette comes in a plastic compact that's brilliantly set up: At the top are three larger pans containing what the brand calls "Eye Foundation" (essentially, base shades), and then nine smaller pans divided into groups of three shadows each: "Nudes," (beige, soft pink, and tan) "Neutrals," (light gold, dusty lavender, rosy pink) and "Liners" (navy, medium brown, and black). This type of arrangement makes choosing colors and combinations much easier, so job well done there!

The shades come in a mix of satin, shimmer, and matte options (all the liner shades are matte), all with a silky texture that's easy to pick up on a brush (we should note: This does not come with its own brush). They apply smoothly and evenly with no patchiness.

The problem is that all the shades (particularly the darker ones) have a noticeable amount of messy, powdery fallout. Even tapping your brush thoroughly before application still results in color getting all over cheekbones and other areas of your face. You'll likely find yourself having to brush off your face, which is not an easy task especially if you apply foundation beforehand!

However, once you do get the colors you want applied and the potential fallout mess cleaned up, these shadows wear well without fading or creasing throughout the day, and are easily removed.

So what about those skincare claims that accompany this palette? These powder shadows contain some good ingredients (antioxidants, hydrolyzed silk, and even a couple of peptides), but in a powder compact they won't have much impact on aging skin. That's particularly true of the antioxidants, which will lose their effectiveness over time because in this packaging they're routinely exposed to light and air, which causes antioxidants to destabilize.

While we certainly admire IT Cosmetics for adding these ingredients, the claims (including the association with plastic surgeons, which may well be true but what does that have to do with makeup?) are overstated; you're better served by a serum, moisturizer, eye cream, or even foundation that contains these ingredients.

Pros:
  • Convenient packaging and logical layout/sizes of the eyeshadows.
  • Fragrance-free formula applies and blends smoothly.
  • Doesn't crease or fade throughout the day.
Cons:
  • All shades have considerable flaking as you apply it (especially the darker shades).
  • Skincare claims are overstated.

Brand Overview

Strengths: Excellent color products, standout foundation and concealer options, impressive highlighters.

Weaknesses: Can be on the pricey side; has a few makeup products with exaggerated anti-aging claims.

IT Cosmetics (the IT stands for “Innovative Technology”) is the creation of Jamie Kern Lima, a former Miss USA pageant contestant and TV news anchor. Lima founded IT Cosmetics in 2008, selling her products in boutique stores and on QVC, then expanding into Canada in 2009. Since then, the line has gotten a lot of exposure with featured reports and stories on network television, including prominent mentions on the ABC reality show Dancing With the Stars.

The labels on most IT Cosmetics products reveal a variety of age-defying claims centered around ingredients like antioxidants, peptides, vitamins, and collagen. Those are indeed great additions to any cosmetic product, but unfortunately, the combination of compact or jar packaging among the formulas that include those helpful ingredients isn’t a good thing.

Air exposure compromises ingredients like antioxidants and peptides, rendering them useless. While that doesn’t affect the quality of the makeup, it is worth noting if you were hoping for an anti-aging edge from IT Cosmetics’ antioxidant-boosted blush or powders.

Of course, IT Cosmetics does have products that are absolutely worth checking out. The line boasts an excellent range of color products, highlighters, foundations and many more worth consideration. As with any line that has a mix of standouts and caveats, shopping using our reviews to guide you is a great way to ensure you’ll at least get your money’s worth, and your skin will be the better for it.
