Review Overview

There are few options for high SPF-rated all mineral sunscreens, primarily because it's a challenge to create one that doesn't look (and feel) like you're wearing Kabuki makeup especially for darker skin tones. That's why we're so glad to see the "new and improved" Josie Maran's Argan Daily Moisturizer SPF 47, because it's a very good broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen option for those with normal to dry skin not prone to breakouts. While you will see the familiar white cast inherent of mineral sunscreens, it fades within a few minutes and its finish will likely be pleasing to those in need of extra moisture.

If you're familiar with Josie Maran's first version of this product, the Protect Daily Sun Protection SPF 40+, depending on your skin type you may find this reformulation less suitable given this new version is an overall more moisturizing formula and has a thicker, heavier feel—you'll have to try it for yourself to make that determination.

The formula contains a nice mix of fatty acids and other moisturizing agents—of course, the namesake argan oil makes an appearance, along with a few antioxidants and anti-irritants like aloe, green tea, vitamin E and bisabolol. Just to be clear, argan oil is a very good, non-fragrant plant oil but there's no research showing it's the best plant oil; it's just one of many good ones. The addition of silicones and polymers helps provide a nice amount of slip on skin. While there is some fragrance present, the amount is slight—though if you have concern like rosacea or eczema, this may not be an ideal choice for you.

You may be wondering about the "SunBoost ATB" mentioned in the marketing materials—it refers to the antioxidant blend this product contains. Antioxidants help offset the environmental free-radical damage your skin experiences daily, and while there isn't anything "innovative" about the blend used here, it is always a skin-beneficial addition we like to see in any SPF-rated product.

Pros:
  • Contains a dry-skin beneficial mix of natural and synthetic emollients.
  • Silicones provide a nice slip to skin, enhancing application while offsetting the thicker feel.
  • Includes a few antioxidants and anti-irritants.
Cons:
  • Contains fragrance (albeit a low level).
Claims

A moisturizer that protects the skin from sun damage—or a sunscreen that moisturizes while it protects? This new, innovative formula is both. You get a lightweight, non-greasy, chemical-free sunscreen that moisturizes, nourishes, smoothes, and boosts the radiance of the skin. Natural protection + beautifying = bliss.

Brand Overview

Josie Maran At-A-Glance

Strengths: The sunscreens provide broad-spectrum protection; well-formulated daytime moisturizer with sunscreen; excellent tinted moisturizer for dry skin; uniquely effective gel blush.

Weaknesses: Expensive; some products are potently fragranced.

The Josie Maran brand was founded by supermodel and former Maybelline spokesperson Josie Maran. Almost every Josie Maran product is centered on the ingredient argan oil, which the brand attributes many beneficial qualities—some of which are true, and some claims made stretch the facts a bit. According to the brand, this non-fragrant plant oil is said to do everything from reduce wrinkles to heal acne, while giving you younger-looking skin.

Argan oil does contain beneficial lipids and fatty acids for skin, as well as vitamin E and other antioxidants—but we should note that it isn't the only oil with such properties. Even more to the point, no single ingredient does it all for skin. It's just like your diet: if you eat only one type of food, you'd soon be malnourished. Skin is the body's largest organ, and it requires a variety of useful ingredients to look and function at its best.

Fortunately, the Josie Maran brand does include many beneficial ingredient’s in some of its best products, and does have some unique offerings to consider. It's worth pointing out also that although argan oil does have benefit for skin, it’s less beneficial to include it in products like eyeshadow and mascara. It does add a unique quality to some makeup, however, especially in a few of the brands lip formulas.

We should note that while the brand relies heavily on the natural theme in its marketing—and there isn’t anything wrong with that—it doesn’t talk about the beneficial ingredients used that aren’t so natural. There isn’t anything wrong with using naturally-derived ingredients, but it strikes us as disingenuous to not tout the benefits of synthetic ingredients such as silicones, preservatives, coloring agents and film formers that also appear in many of Josie Maran products.

As is the case with many brands that use predominantly natural ingredients, there are some fragrant oils to be wary of, as these can be problematic for any skin type (but especially so for those with sensitivity concerns). However, there are a few products here that are absolutely worth considering and unique—see our individual reviews on the brand for more details.

Great all around

The review says its not for oily skin, however I have very sensitive, combo skin and haven't had any breakouts with this! It also blends really well and is a life saver because it contains sunscreen AND moisture. I don't have to apply sunscreen on top (that normally causes breakouts for me). It also lasts a while so though expensive, balances out. Highly recommend!!

Breakout City

I bought this to try because of the great ratings here. Later I read that this may have been reformulated because there is definitely a tropical-ish scent, it's VERY thick and made my already pale face more pale. I'm sensitive to sunscreens in general, and this one made my eyes water badly. And, last but not least it caused massive break out on my previously clear skin. Purchased in June 2014 and returned to Sephora.

Fantastic product!

This product is truly amazing! I love the fact that it is very rich, creamy and moisturizing. I never would have thought to combine a moisturizer with sunscreen - before, I always would layer my sunscreen over my makeup and moisturizer, which can be messy. I love the fact that this is packed with antioxidants, and saves an extra step in my morning routine. I have normal skin but sometimes get large pimples in the lower cheek and jaw area, but haven't had any since I started using this product.

Fantastic moisturizer for normal to dry

An excellent moisturizer. I have been searching for years for a moisturizer that didn't leave my skin dry by the end of the day...and the addition of a physical, high SPF sunscreen is awesome. I'm in my mid-30's, and sunscreen is a big priority. This product makes me feel that I'm fending off aging through both the superb moisturization and strong sunscreen - a double whammy if you ask me. It takes a moment to sink into the skin (before applying foundation) but trust me, it's worth the wait.

New formula is bad

The fragrance is not mild at all but cloying (and I don't typically mind mild fragrance). Also agree with the previous reviewer that the old formulation was fantastic. The new stuff gave me awful breakouts and was so thick it felt like a mask. Would not recommend!

Bring back the old formula

They never should have touched this formula. The original version was my holy grail after years of looking--odorless, not irritating, long-lasting, comfortable, fast-absorbing. Now it's gloppy and sticky, hard to spread. It doesn't absorb well. It's turned me off the brand as a whole, to be honest.

Nice Texture, Nice Odor, Not Sure About SPF

I wanted something with SPF that was more moisturizing. This product goes on nicely. The white cast blends down in a few minutes however it leaves my face with an obvious sheen. I usually put on some mineral powder after using this. I am not sure about the real SPF protection here because I've seen some sun spots darken whilst using this product. To me that raises questions about how protective this really is. It has a lovely scent & texture, is very moisturizing but I question the SPF.
