Kat Von D's Lock-It Powder Foundation is an excellent medium coverage, fragrance-free powder foundation. The finish is natural looking, and can be layered for near-full concealment of uneven skin tone, but it can easily be over applied if you use a heavy hand—a little of this goes a long way. This is best for those with oily to combination skin, who will enjoy its satin-matte finish that doesn't feel the least bit heavy.

If you have dry skin, this isn't going to be the ideal foundation for you (that goes for most powder foundations in general)—moisturizing formulas tend to be better suited for dry skin (liquids or creams, for example). If you have acne-prone skin, however, this is an excellent formula to consider due to its ability to conceal while maintaining a natural-looking finish on skin.

Packaged in Kat Von D's trademark black and silver design, the mirrored compact is heavy and durable. It includes a sponge for touch-ups, too. Unlike its liquid Lock-It Foundation counterpart, this can be applied quickly and blends well over skin with little effort. Using the accompanying sponge, you'll find this provides near full coverage easily—in fact, we found that the sponge made over application a little too easy due to the powder's buttery soft texture.

In general, we recommend applying powder foundations with a brush, as this method allows you to build coverage in lighter layers for a more skin-like result. This is certainly true with the Lock-It Powder Foundation, as a brush allowed for greater control of how much product you apply, which served to enhance the formula's natural finish.

The level of coverage is sufficient to conceal redness and an uneven skin tone, but if you have deep red or brown marks, you'll likely find a concealer is still necessary. For those with oily to combination skin, this holds up well over the course of the workday. If you have very oily skin, however, this won't control shine well and blotting will be a necessity by lunch—but to be fair, few foundations can change this fact for those in this skin type group.

Although the marketing states this is sweat proof, don't expect this to hold up through a morning run! It holds up well though mild perspiration, but if you plan to sweat profusely, you'll see substantial wear of its coverage within a short period. However, we will say that this faded evenly under such conditions and resisted caking or visible breakup on skin.

Kat Von D, at the time of this review, offers an outstanding range of 18 shades of Lock-It Powder Foundation—most are neutral and there are choices for those with very fair to light, medium and deep skin tones. However, as is the case with most foundations, it is always best to try it in person for the best match.

This earned our highest rating due to the fact it is a pleasure to use, blends well over skin and looks natural while providing medium coverage. If you're in the mood to splurge for a powder foundation, this is absolutely one to consider.

Pros:
  • Fragrance free.
  • Natural-looking medium coverage + satin finish.
  • Wide shade range for those with fair to deeper skin tones.
  • Can be layered for full coverage, wears well over the course of the day.
Cons:
  • The enclosed sponge can result in applying too much product.

Brand Overview

Kat Von D At-A-Glance

Celebrity makeup lines are nothing new—we’ve seen dozens of them over the years—but this one is a first in that it shocked us a bit. Kat Von D’s main claim to fame was her successful tattooing enterprise, and her role as a former reality TV show star. Now, she's a makeup entrepreneur—and a very good one.

The line launched in 2007 with only two eyeshadow palettes, cream lipstick, and eyeliner, but since has expanded by adding several new products, including remarkable lip products, blushes and more. Just like most makeup lines, this is one to shop carefully; for every great product, there are a few that could use improvement.

All Kat Von D makeup products come packaged with the line’s signature images of roses and thorns (perhaps to reinforce Von D’s love of tattoo design), which definitely makes these products stand out among a sea of blandly packaged makeup containers.

Strengths: Excellent eyeshadow palettes and trios; long-wearing cream and liquid lipstick; truly lasting powder blushes and bronzers.

Weaknesses: A few products on the pricey side (this is a minor quibble).
