As a makeup brand, Kat von D is a standout for its eyeshadow palettes—for good reason: They're largely high quality and a good value, and the Serpentina Eyeshadow Palette is no exception.

The brand claims this palette is inspired by the rich colors of ancient Egypt, and that's apparent as soon as you open the mirrored, sarcophagus-like cardboard container in which it's housed. Inside are eight bold, jewel-toned pressed powder shadows and a small pot of metallic gold pigment powder. Hello, Cleopatra!

This is definitely a palette for those who like bold eye looks: All but two of the shades (a matte rust-colored red and a matte smoky purple) contain shimmer. In addition to the red and purple shades, the set includes emerald green, cobalt blue, rose gold, sherbet orange, deep bronzy brown, and two gold colors (an antique gold pressed powder and the yellow gold loose pigment).

Like most of Kat von D's shadows, these have a smooth texture that's easy to pick up on a brush and blend. The pigment quality is strong, with only a little shadow needed to get a lot of color.

One thing you will notice during application—and the reason why this does not get our top rating—is that there's some amount of fallout with every shade in the palette. You can easily brush this off your cheeks, but it's worth noting.

Once applied, though, these shadows don't flake or fade even through a full workday's worth of wear. We found this to be the case, both applied with primer and worn alone. The color was going strong up to eight hours after application, and, though shimmery, there was no fallout once these shadows were on our lids. Even better: The bold colors were a cinch to remove with our standard makeup remover.

If you're looking for a one-stop-shop palette for statement eyes, Kat von D's Serpentina Eyeshadow Palette delivers!

Pros:
  • Shadows are easy to apply and blend.
  • Strong pigment quality.
  • Wear well throughout the day without fading or flaking.
  • Easy to remove.
Cons:
  • All shades have some fallout during application.

Brand Overview

Kat Von D At-A-Glance

Celebrity makeup lines are nothing new—we’ve seen dozens of them over the years—but this one is a first in that it shocked us a bit. Kat Von D’s main claim to fame was her successful tattooing enterprise, and her role as a former reality TV show star. Now, she's a makeup entrepreneur—and a very good one.

The line launched in 2007 with only two eyeshadow palettes, cream lipstick, and eyeliner, but since has expanded by adding several new products, including remarkable lip products, blushes and more. Just like most makeup lines, this is one to shop carefully; for every great product, there are a few that could use improvement.

All Kat Von D makeup products come packaged with the line’s signature images of roses and thorns (perhaps to reinforce Von D’s love of tattoo design), which definitely makes these products stand out among a sea of blandly packaged makeup containers.

Strengths: Excellent eyeshadow palettes and trios; long-wearing cream and liquid lipstick; truly lasting powder blushes and bronzers.

Weaknesses: A few products on the pricey side (this is a minor quibble).
