Review Overview

Although these eyeshadow singles have an enviably smooth texture and provide excellent coverage, they're as gimmicky and as difficult to wear as LYCRA® pants. Depending on the light in the room, the green Shade Shifter Eyeshadow might appear red, or even a muddied gray-orange, and the other shades are just as tricky. This ends up being a first amongst eyeshadows: You apply the color and go the rest of the day not knowing what others see, as it keeps changing based on how your eyes are lit.

These eyeshadows can be applied wet or dry, but they're intended to be "foiled" (applied wet, with the provided sponge), which supposedly "activates" the shadows to change colors. In reality, wet application only intensifies the color deposit (as expected), making the unattractive color changes that much more noticeable. No, thank you!

  • Silky-smooth texture blends well.
  • Provides good coverage and color payoff.
  • Difficult to coordinate with other eyeshadows.
  • Shifts to an unattractive range of colors in different lighting.
  • Gimmicky despite its unique twist.
  • Pricey.
Brand Overview

Kat Von D At-A-Glance

Strengths: Excellent eyeshadow palettes and trios; long-wearing cream and liquid lipstick; truly lasting powder blushes and bronzers.

Weaknesses: A few products on the pricey side (this is a minor quibble).

Celebrity makeup lines are nothing new—we’ve seen dozens of them over the years—but this one is a first in that it shocked us a bit. Kat Von D’s main claim to fame was her successful tattooing enterprise, and her role as a former reality TV show star. Now, she's a makeup entrepreneur—and a very good one.

The line launched in 2007 with only two eyeshadow palettes, cream lipstick, and eyeliner, but since has expanded by adding several new products, including remarkable lip products, blushes and more. Just like most makeup lines, this is one to shop carefully; for every great product, there are a few that could use improvement.

All Kat Von D makeup products come packaged with the line’s signature images of roses and thorns (perhaps to reinforce Von D’s love of tattoo design), which definitely makes these products stand out among a sea of blandly packaged makeup containers.
