Studded Kiss Lipstick's strong point is the rich, opaque pigmentation it delivers, but getting the color to go on evenly isn't as easy as "one swipe." Most of the shades have a matte finish but a substantial cream texture that feels like it will stay put for close to the 10 hours it's claimed to.

Sounds great, right? The trouble is that getting this lipstick to go on evenly takes some work, and if you have any dry skin on your lips you'll likely notice color looking more built up in some areas than others.

The good news is that the pigmentation does last for a good while (about seven hours for the bolder shades, less for softer hues), but that doesn't mean it's totally budge-proof. On the one hand, the texture isn't so slick that it's prone to migrating into lip lines, but at the same time we noticed it easily transferred to whatever it comes into contact with. The wear initially feels comfortable, but quickly transitions to a more drying sensation in less than an hour. Very strange!

Turning to the shades: The choices vary from soft nudes to downright Gothic colors with plenty of options in between. There are undeniably some off-kilter shades (navy, black, and bright lavender), but there are enough workable colors to complement a variety of preferences and skin tones.

In addition to the matte shades, there are also a handful of glittery/metallic shades. Those tend to glide on more easily, but they don't stay put as well as the mattes do, and getting the color to look smooth still takes some work.

All things considered, this lightly flavored lipstick is more trouble than it's worth, but if you're still intrigued, give it a try and tell us what you think in the Member Comments section. We'd love to hear how it worked out for you!

Pros:
  • Richly pigmented lipstick offers long-lasting color.
  • Diverse shade range to suit a variety of preferences and skin tones.
  • Matte shades aren't likely to migrate into lines around the mouth.
Cons:
  • Getting this lipstick to apply smoothly takes some work.
  • Despite the matte finish, this transfers easily onto whatever it comes into contact with.
  • Feels slightly drying after a while.

Brand Overview

Kat Von D At-A-Glance

Celebrity makeup lines are nothing new—we’ve seen dozens of them over the years—but this one is a first in that it shocked us a bit. Kat Von D’s main claim to fame was her successful tattooing enterprise, and her role as a former reality TV show star. Now, she's a makeup entrepreneur—and a very good one.

The line launched in 2007 with only two eyeshadow palettes, cream lipstick, and eyeliner, but since has expanded by adding several new products, including remarkable lip products, blushes and more. Just like most makeup lines, this is one to shop carefully; for every great product, there are a few that could use improvement.

All Kat Von D makeup products come packaged with the line’s signature images of roses and thorns (perhaps to reinforce Von D’s love of tattoo design), which definitely makes these products stand out among a sea of blandly packaged makeup containers.

Strengths: Excellent eyeshadow palettes and trios; long-wearing cream and liquid lipstick; truly lasting powder blushes and bronzers.

Weaknesses: A few products on the pricey side (this is a minor quibble).
