Review Overview

This two-step mascara involves the typical white, wax-based primer followed by mascara. The point of difference is that the mascara forms tubes around each lash, but other than easy removal you won’t gain any performance difference by choosing this concept over a traditional mascara formula. If anything, the tubes (which really do come off with water and slight agitation) can stick to your skin during the rinsing process. That’s not a deal-breaker, but something to be aware of if you decide to try this mascara. Overall, the primer adds bulk and separation to lashes while the mascara extends lashes to an impressive length.

Brand Overview

L'Oreal Paris At-A-Glance

Strengths: Budget-friendly prices; good makeup removers; wide assortment of self-tanning options; one of the best, most comprehensive makeup collections at the drugstore, with superb options in almost every category; the mascaras are a tough act to follow.

Weaknesses: Jar packaging hinders some of the skincare formulas; many of their skincare formulas contain problematic amounts of fragrance and/or other irritants; exaggerated anti-aging claims.

L'Oreal's extensive makeup collection retains its stature as one of the better selections at the drugstore, though they have stiff competition from Revlon and, in some cases, sister company Maybelline New York. In recent years L'Oreal has made significant strides with foundation shades, powder textures, concealers, and, of course, superlative mascaras that rarely fail to impress. Their lipsticks are excellent and you will find many L'Oreal makeup products have a Lancome counterpart, and that the differences are minor—if there are any at all.

L'Oreal's displays in many drugstores reflect better-organized products and shade categories (though testers are still scarce). Given the number of lipsticks they sell, it only makes sense to put them in color families so consumers have a better shopping experience. Their True Match products are also sensibly laid out, but the rest of the foundations aren't as organized, likely due to the smaller selection of shades. Speaking of foundations, L'Oreal has made further strides by offering more that provide sufficient UVA protection. Revlon still has the edge for consistently launching impressive foundations with sunscreen, but at least L'Oreal is (finally) catching up.

The bottom line is that every category of L'Oreal’s makeup has some winning (and in some cases, benchmark-setting) products.

Unfortunately, despite the brands’ enormous presence in the beauty industry, L'Oreal's moisturizers and treatment products are a nearly all unremarkable and repetitive. When it comes to moisturizers or serums, just about anything from Dove, Olay, Neutrogena, or Aveeno is preferred. L'Oreal does well with most of their cleansers, along with scrubs and self-tanning products, but given the widespread availability and financial resources of this line, they could be doing so much more. The good news is their makeup has made major strides and now ranks as the best overall color collection at the drugstore—imagine the results if their skin care followed suit.

Clumpy

The primer makes my lashes stick together. It works better for me if I use the mascara by itself. No flaking and easy to wash off.

Best for watery eyes

I recently developed "Dry Eye" so the first few hours after I wake up my eyes just drip like crazy. was thrilled to read a review that this was a 'tube style' mascara. I once used Kevyn aucoin tube mascara and thought it was the most incredible invention. But that was years ago and I don't like spending $26 on mascara; so now when I stray and try something different (thank you sephora for the BD gift with makeup forever mascara which is quite good) I always return to this!! No runny mascara!

My #1 Holy Grail!!!

My #1 Holy Grail makeup product. This is everything I want in a mascara... Length, Volume, Separation, NO flaking, No Smudging/Transfer, Easy removal. I do not use the primer step. It can be clumpy and product performs well without it. I live in humid environment and this CANNOT smudge or transfer. Lashes are stiff but I can handle that. This is kind of pricey for drugstore mascara - SHOP AROUND for good price. And even if you pay MSRP, it is worth it!!!

LOVE IT!

I LOVE THIS! Tubes = NO Smudge, NO Flaking! Comes off so..... easily! I really don't use the primer - it seems to stick the lashes together, so I ONLY use the mascara end. Without the Primer my lashes look amazing! The only NEGATIVE, I wish I could get an entire tube of this formula, instead of 1/2 primer, 1/2 mascara. I will NEVER go back to regular formulas -- This is an AMAZING secret, more women should know about!

Perfect for super sensitive eyes!

I have never really worn mascara on a regular basis because regular mascaras require makeup remover to get off and makeup remover causes eye problems for me. Since this mascara truly only needs warm water to remove I can now wear mascara! However I can't say that this mascara lengthens lashes as long as some others that are on the market right now but if you are like me and have sensitive eyes or really hate black smudges the next morning this is the mascara for you!

No smudging! Stays on until I take it off.

Finally a mascara that really doesn't smudge! I tried many other mascaras that others say "wear without a hitch" and they start leaving black marks under my eyes within an hour. This one stays on until I take it off, even in the rain and working out. And it's easy to take off with just a wet cotton pad. The downside is that it didn't make my skimpy lashes very thick, but combined with RapidLash it works great. The only other mascara that stays on for me is CoverGirl LashBlast 24HR.
