Infallible Never Fail Lacquer Liner 24H

Review Overview

This jar-packaged gel eyeliner offers a smooth stroke of color that is easy to apply with the included brush, although this brush isn't ideal if you're looking for ultra-thin application (nonetheless, it's a free brush and of decent quality).

L'Oreal advertises this as leaving a glossy, lacquered look, but it's actually more of a dull, matte finish, which is fine unless you're looking for a lacquered finish. Shades include attractive hues of black, gray, brown, and dark blue. All in all, this is a nice, flake-free liner that stays put once set (but you must give it time to dry). Forget the 24-hour claim; it doesn't last that long—you shouldn't wear eyeliner for that long anyway!

Pros:
  • Color goes on smoothly and is easy to apply.
  • Attractive shades.
  • Doesn't flake or smudge once set.
Cons:
  • Doesn't have a glossy, lacquer finish as claimed (but that's not necessarily a bad thing).

Brand Overview

L'Oreal Paris At-A-Glance

Strengths: Budget-friendly prices; good makeup removers; wide assortment of self-tanning options; one of the best, most comprehensive makeup collections at the drugstore, with superb options in almost every category; the mascaras are a tough act to follow.

Weaknesses: Jar packaging hinders some of the skincare formulas; many of their skincare formulas contain problematic amounts of fragrance and/or other irritants; exaggerated anti-aging claims.

L'Oreal's extensive makeup collection retains its stature as one of the better selections at the drugstore, though they have stiff competition from Revlon and, in some cases, sister company Maybelline New York. In recent years L'Oreal has made significant strides with foundation shades, powder textures, concealers, and, of course, superlative mascaras that rarely fail to impress. Their lipsticks are excellent and you will find many L'Oreal makeup products have a Lancome counterpart, and that the differences are minor—if there are any at all.

L'Oreal's displays in many drugstores reflect better-organized products and shade categories (though testers are still scarce). Given the number of lipsticks they sell, it only makes sense to put them in color families so consumers have a better shopping experience. Their True Match products are also sensibly laid out, but the rest of the foundations aren't as organized, likely due to the smaller selection of shades. Speaking of foundations, L'Oreal has made further strides by offering more that provide sufficient UVA protection. Revlon still has the edge for consistently launching impressive foundations with sunscreen, but at least L'Oreal is (finally) catching up.

The bottom line is that every category of L'Oreal’s makeup has some winning (and in some cases, benchmark-setting) products.

Unfortunately, despite the brands’ enormous presence in the beauty industry, L'Oreal's moisturizers and treatment products are a nearly all unremarkable and repetitive. When it comes to moisturizers or serums, just about anything from Dove, Olay, Neutrogena, or Aveeno is preferred. L'Oreal does well with most of their cleansers, along with scrubs and self-tanning products, but given the widespread availability and financial resources of this line, they could be doing so much more. The good news is their makeup has made major strides and now ranks as the best overall color collection at the drugstore—imagine the results if their skin care followed suit.

Sweat Proof!

NO kidding, Never Fail! Lasted through a lot of dancing, when sweat was pouring down through my eyes. No transfer to under my eyes! :-) :-) :-) (Only eyeliner to make it, so far. Yet to try the Smashbox one...)

Won't stay put

I had previously used a gel eyeliner from L'Oreal's HIP line was great. I thought this would be similar but I ended up throwing this away after two weeks. No matter how long I let it dry I would end up with dark smudges on my eyelids above the crease two or three hours later. I do use moisturizer on my eyelids and maybe that was why this eyeliner never really did dry on me. But I found a similar product from E.L.F. for a third the price that doesn't migrate and lasts till I take it off.

Dries out

I also was initially very happy with this product but it dried out very quickly -- faster than anything else I've used (MAC, Bobbi, Maybelline). So, not a great option unless it is for a special event and you don't plan to use it daily.

Retract my previous review

I retract my previous good review of this eyeliner. While it applies great, the whole container was dried out in less than 2 weeks. And yes, I closed it tightly every time I used it. Back to Clinique's brush on cream liner for me--it has never dried out on me.

Excellent gel eyeliner

This gel eyeliner is just as good as the offerings from Bobbi Brown and Clinique but at a fraction of the cost! This applies well (the included brush is just ok, not the best or the worst) and stays on all day until it washes off easily with face wash. I agree that it does not leave a lacquered finish but a completely matte finish. I wear the darkest black color to line my upper lash line only and I can do the little cat-eye wing and it stays all day.

Great gel liner at a great price

I use gel liner for lining my waterline. Bought the espresso for the top, and bronze for the bottom. Espresso is EXCELLENT for this purpose, the bronze seems "translucent" and ends up looking sloppy. So I highly recommend espresso and of course black for waterlining, but beware the "shiny" offerings.

Not all it's cracked up to be.

This went on easily, just as others have said, but I've not had any luck with it staying in place. After applying & letting it set, I still ended up with black eyeliner all over my eye lids. I cleaned up my eye lids w/ QTips, but now keep finding black smudges under my eyes despite the fact that I've been specifically hands-off today. Now, about 7 hours after having applied the eye liner, only about half of it remains on my eyes, and the wings of my winged-look have disappeared.

Nice

This is a lovely, lovely gel eyeliner. It is very soft so it goes on easily and then dries to a long wearing finish. Easy to "tight line" on the inside of eye. The included brush works well (much better than the one that came with the "hip") but also works with other brushes if you want a thinner line. Over all a great eye liner.

Best gel eyeliner I've tried!

Best gel eyeliner I've tried! I like this gel eyeliner even better than Bobbi Brown's. With one easy stroke, you get rich, intense color, and it lasts all day. The shade selection is really nice too. Highly recommended!
