Review Overview

We’re always excited when we see a mineral-based sunscreen included in concealers, because adequate broad-spectrum sun protection is essential for anti-aging benefit, and most cosmetics companies leave this crucial aspect of skin care out of these kinds of eye products.

Sun protection alone, however, does not make a great concealer, so fortunately this one also has a blendable texture, click pen–style packaging, and a tapered synthetic-hair brush applicator that works like a charm. Though there’s nothing in this fragrance-free concealer that’s going to visibly lift your skin, the thin liquid texture will provide lasting medium coverage of dark circles or discolorations. The shades are impressively neutral and suited for fair to medium skin tones.

Note: As of mid-2014, L'Oreal is no longer offering this porduct with SPF 20 protection. We continue to see the SPF version sold in many stores, but L'Oreal's U.S.website no longer advertises this concealer as containing sunscreen. If you decide to try this, please check to be sure the version you're about to buy lists SPF 20. If it does not, then this is still recommended as a good concealer, just one that no longer provides sun protection.

Pros:
  • Thin, blendable texture that sets to a satin finish.
  • Tapered synthetic brush applicator is easy to use.
  • Built-in gentle mineral sunscreen provides broad-spectrum sun protection.
  • Lasting medium coverage helps conceal dark circles and skin discolorations.
  • Four neutral shades for fair to medium skin tones.
  • Fragrance-free.
Cons:
  • The newest version of this product no longer offers sun protection, so check the label before buying.

Brand Overview

L'Oreal Paris At-A-Glance

Strengths: Budget-friendly prices; good makeup removers; wide assortment of self-tanning options; one of the best, most comprehensive makeup collections at the drugstore, with superb options in almost every category; the mascaras are a tough act to follow.

Weaknesses: Jar packaging hinders some of the skincare formulas; many of their skincare formulas contain problematic amounts of fragrance and/or other irritants; exaggerated anti-aging claims.

L'Oreal's extensive makeup collection retains its stature as one of the better selections at the drugstore, though they have stiff competition from Revlon and, in some cases, sister company Maybelline New York. In recent years L'Oreal has made significant strides with foundation shades, powder textures, concealers, and, of course, superlative mascaras that rarely fail to impress. Their lipsticks are excellent and you will find many L'Oreal makeup products have a Lancome counterpart, and that the differences are minor—if there are any at all.

L'Oreal's displays in many drugstores reflect better-organized products and shade categories (though testers are still scarce). Given the number of lipsticks they sell, it only makes sense to put them in color families so consumers have a better shopping experience. Their True Match products are also sensibly laid out, but the rest of the foundations aren't as organized, likely due to the smaller selection of shades. Speaking of foundations, L'Oreal has made further strides by offering more that provide sufficient UVA protection. Revlon still has the edge for consistently launching impressive foundations with sunscreen, but at least L'Oreal is (finally) catching up.

The bottom line is that every category of L'Oreal’s makeup has some winning (and in some cases, benchmark-setting) products.

Unfortunately, despite the brands’ enormous presence in the beauty industry, L'Oreal's moisturizers and treatment products are a nearly all unremarkable and repetitive. When it comes to moisturizers or serums, just about anything from Dove, Olay, Neutrogena, or Aveeno is preferred. L'Oreal does well with most of their cleansers, along with scrubs and self-tanning products, but given the widespread availability and financial resources of this line, they could be doing so much more. The good news is their makeup has made major strides and now ranks as the best overall color collection at the drugstore—imagine the results if their skin care followed suit.

Drastic change from SPF version

The SPF version was wonderful, but can only find it on ebay now. The newer version has a lot of different ingredients(I compared the new and old just like Paula taught me) and the Fair color now has a much more yellow tone. It doesn't cover dark circles well and immediately sinks into any creases you might have. The SPF version was great for my pale, red headed complexion and stayed smooth for hours. I am very disappointed that they changed it and now have to search for a good replacement

Does Not Contain Sunscreen Anymore

I noticed different labels on two shades (Medium and Medium Deep) of this product. One listed the SPF 20 sunscreen and ingredients, and the other had neither sunscreen nor ingredients listed. I wrote to L'Oreal inquiring if this product still has SPF, and this is their response: "In 2012 we phased out our SPF claim for this product, so the concealer that does not list an SPF is the newer packaging. The products are good for at least 3 years, unopened." Hope this helps everyone!

Just OK

Based on the beautypedia review, I picked this up, hoping it would work. While the price is great, and the concealer doesn't set right away, which gives me time to blend it, this is still not the best concealer for me. First of all, it does sit in my wrinkles, and I find myself smoothing it out with my fingers throughout the day. It doesn't cover my prominent dark circles, either. I guess I'm still on the hunt for a good liquid concealer.

Love it! Apply correctly.

I love this for my eye area, and on my nose. Medium/deep is a great match. I do not wear foundation or powder. Under eye coverage is even better now that I to apply and kind of just "smoosh" in with my ringer finger, instead of trying to blend with my finger.

No longer is made with spf

It was a great product when it had the spf, now they changed it without calling attention to removing the spf. It's no longer in the ingredients or on the labeling yet everything else is same. What a disappointment.

Finally!

I've spent years searching for the best concealer. Having allergies and hereditary very dark circles and bags, I've been on an never ending quest. Although not thick, this product does an excellent job because it doesn't crease, has a luminous finish and most importantly is in a pen format. What I've discovered is you need a pen to 'erase' your 'bag line'. If you have bags, you know what this means. Excellent, excellent product - as recommended by Paula.

Not good for dark spots

I want to like this more, but it doesn't quite cut it for me. It covers small pimples and under-eye circles very well. However, it does noting for my hyperpigmentation marks and dark scars I have from acne. For light coverage, this will work well. For anything darker than a pimple, don't expect miracles.

I wanted to love this...

I wanted to love this conconcealer. It definitely covered my dark circles and my minor imperfections, and it stayed in place without creasing. However, after only 3 days of use, it dried out the skin under my eyes so badly that the skin started flaking! I didn't change anything in my routine except the concealer, and once I stopped using it, my skin gradually returned to normal.

The Best!

This is absolutely the best concealer I've ever used. Stays in place, doesn't crease, and has wonderful coverage. Works especially well for dark circles, and it also works well to cover acne scarring/inflammation. Highly recommend.
