Review Overview

Mally promotes this unique silicone-based product as the ultimate alternative to finishing powder. It’s said to smooth and mattify skin without the dry, ashy look some powders have.

Formula-wise it’s mostly silicones blended together to produce a colorless, semi-solid texture that blends beautifully for an elegant, silky-smooth, non-greasy finish. Dabbed over makeup or bare skin, it produces a temporary mattifying effect and, true to claim, smoothes over pores to make them (temporarily) appear smaller.

The key is to not get overzealous and apply too much (doing so will cause the product to ball up) and to dab, not rub, it onto the skin. Once you get the application down, this really is a nice alternative to powder because it doesn’t disturb your makeup and can be used for touchups throughout the day. This is a standout product from Mally, and deserves our top rating. We just wish it weren’t so expensive, but at least you’re getting a product that works as claimed, is fragrance-free, and is suitable for sensitive skin!

Pros:

  • Elegant, silky-smooth, non-greasy texture.
  • Applies well under, or over, makeup.
  • Smoothes skin without a powdery or chalky finish.
  • Temporary mattifying effect.
  • Colorless so it works for all skin tones.

Cons:

  • Overpriced.

Brand Overview

Mally Beauty At-A-Glance

Strengths: Impressive concealers; the City Chick Smokey Eye Kit performs beautifully; Evercolor Poreless Face Defender is an excellent alternative to traditional face powder; some good lip color options; Volumizing Mascara; Evercolor Lasting Eyeliner goes beyond typical liquid eyeliners with outstanding staying power; good brow products.

Weaknesses: Couture Color Custom Blush and powder foundation can be difficult to use; potentially irritating makeup remover; the Perfect Prep Soothing Eye Gel is disappointing.

Mally Roncal is a celebrity makeup artist who has worked on some of the most famous faces in Hollywood, not to mention numerous spreads in fashion magazines. After much success as a makeup artist, Roncal launched Mally Beauty—her namesake line of makeup and limited skin-care products—with the guiding philosophy that "the things that make us different are the qualities that make us beautiful." That’s a great philosophy, but the question is: Are these quality products with a difference that will help you look and feel more beautiful?

As might be expected, Mally Roncal's celebrity cache created buzz when her line launched, and the chatter has led to a strong following on the QVC shopping channel, which is the primary home of her products. While Roncal knows how to sell a product (She is quite the cheerleader on air!) and she has worked with celebrities, that doesn't automatically mean all the Mally Beauty products are worth buying.

Although there are some well-formulated and innovative products to be found, Mally Beauty has a few misses. The majority of Mally Beauty's eye makeup and eyebrow products perform quite well, they feature a spectacular concealer with sunscreen and there are some good lip color options as well. Mally's Cancellation Conditioning Concealer and Evercolor Poreless Face Defender are top notch worthy of special mention.

On the flipside, Mally Beauty misses the mark with a few of the foundations, primers, and blushes we tried. The foundation we experimented with was especially disappointing because Mally Roncal is known for creating the illusion of perfect, dewy-looking skin, which her Ultimate Performance Professional Foundation didn't accomplish with our team.

We have to give Mally Beauty praise for including helpful application tips, demonstration videos, and full ingredient lists on the company website, and for their wonderful team who was more than helpful in sending products for The Paula's Choice Research Team to experiment with. There are some strong options to be found here, as well as others we would recommend skipping and our reviews will steer you toward what’s worth your time and money.

NO MORE OIL BLOTTERS!!!

I have combo/oily skin & you can fry an egg on my forehead. I use this as the last step in my makeup routine. I have one at home & one in my purse for touch-ups/blot oil thru out the day i one easy step. I can't live without this. It doesn't matter if I'm wearing drugstore or high-end makeup, this always works. It makes my skin elegantly smooth, pore-less & oil-free 'instantly' LOOOOOOVE IT!!!

I don't leave home without it

I have pretty oily skin considering my age. I hate shine and this takes care of it without cakey powders settling into my fine lines.

Disappointed

Got the smooshing application down, but skin looked too matte. Instead of minimizing the look of pores and fine lines, it seemed to magnify. First day of use, mineral make-up broke up and settled into pores and lines, and appeared dry and flaky. Horrible. Next day I tried it on 1/2 my face with only Paula's Choice Barely There as a foundation. The side I smooshed product on looked old and parched. While the other side looked fresh, dewy, and younger with Paula's Choice Best Face Forward.

Great Product!

This is a fantastic product. Thanks to Paula's review, I gave it a try, and am so glad I did. Yes, there is a learning curve to this product, but it's worth it. I'm not much of a makeup wearer, but I like what little I wear to look good and stay on. As I age, powders are looking pretty bad, so I use this now. Love it! I have combo skin, and use all of Paula's skin care products and a very liberal application of tinted physical SPF, a little blush, and this product makes that all look great.

Awesome multi use product.

I am not much of a make up wearer, but I use my skin care, this makes my face matte after I do my skin care regime, and it seals in my skin care also. I have recently become a total Paula's choice user for my skin care and am using her tint with 30 SPF, the defender mattes it seals it and I am good till night, and I am combo so it works even in my oily spots all day. This is my only other products, Mally and Paula can make a girl perfois as they can be without surgery.

WAXY/GREASY

May work for drier skins....but then they don't need mattification. What a conundrum. This is loaded with dimethicone, which makes it feel waxy and slick. Ugh.

love the finish

I tried this product after looking for something to finish off my face after my makeup was on but didn't want to use a powder as it can settle into the small wrinkles in my face. I was not disappointed & it is now in my daily routine! It gives me a smooth soft matte finish & keeps my makeup in place. You MUST blot your skin with the sponge & do not get to much on the sponge to begin with. I am 40 yrs old & as I get older I am looking for products that help fight the wrinkles and this is a product that does just that.
