Maybelline's Color Blur Matte Lip Pencil is a product designed with a particular trend in mind (more on that in a moment). While the trendy aspect of it doesn't quite work as intended, it has a lot going for it, which is why it earns a good rating on Beautypedia!

Color Blur Matte Lip Pencil comes in a dual-ended twist-up tube. On one end is the product itself, on the opposite is a "blurring" tool (more on that in a sec). Though this is called a lip pencil, it's actually a lipstick, and a good one at that! Starting things on a positive note is that this is fragrance-free, and things only get better when it comes to application. This lipstick is incredibly smooth and lightweight, and glides across lips with ease (not always the case with matte products!).

Color Blur Matte Lip Pencil has strong color quality, imparting bold color in just one swipe. The finish is an attractive soft matte that isn't drying and still feels pliable even after it's been on a while. Though it wears off in three or four hours (even quicker if you have a meal), it fades to an attractive stain and comes off easily needing a makeup remover. It also comes in a pretty range of shades, from soft pinks to strong, true reds.

Now back to the blurring tool. It's essentially an angled piece of hard white plastic attached to the end of the lip pencil. It's supposed to help lips achieve a particular trendy look: Having color concentrated right at the center of the mouth, with it blurring at the edges until there is no color near the edge of the lips.

It's a pretty look, but you don't need this tool to get it; in fact the tool doesn't blur the color much at all. The effect is more of an uneven smudging instead of the more deliberate trend look, which is easier to achieve with a tissue or a finger than with this tool. The tool also can become messy over time, requiring frequent cleaning.

Though the tool is billed as a major selling point, it's really the lipstick itself that shines when it comes to this product. Because it is so good, despite the gimmicky applicator, Color Blur Matte Lip Pencil definitely gets our recommendation as one of the better matte drugstore lip options.

Pros:
  • Twist-up lip pencil doesn't require sharpening.
  • Fragrance-free.
  • Feels smooth and lightweight on.
  • Strong color quality that fades to an attractive stain.
  • Attractive soft matte finish.
Cons:
  • Blurring tool is gimmicky and messy.

Undefine the rules of color with Color Blur cream matte pencil and blurring smudger. The cream matte pencil feels extremely smooth and comfortable on lips while the blurring smudger means you can create your own looks from full-on bold to softly blurred.

Brand Overview

Maybelline New York At-A-Glance

Strengths: At least one excellent product (if not several) in almost every category; many excellent foundations; superior mascaras; inexpensive makeup brushes; some terrific concealers, powders, blush, and lip color options.

Weaknesses: Lips balms tend to be a letdown; a few of the Great Lash mascaras are surprisingly average compared to other Maybelline formulas.

Maybelline is one of the best-known and most recognized mass-market makeup lines in the world—it's available in 90 countries. Throughout its long history, which began in 1915 when T. L. Wilson founded the company and named it after his sister, Mabel, and Vaseline (which he combined with coal dust to concoct a mascara for her), the company has prided itself on bringing innovative products to the marketplace. L'Oreal purchased the company in early 1996, and that's when things really started coming together for the Maybelline brand.

Specializing in a large selection of lipsticks, nail polishes, and mascaras, there is a lot to love from this drugstore brand. Many of their foundations are exceptional, and their powders, several mascaras, pencils, matte-finish concealers, and Superstay Lipcolor collection impressed us by offering a high degree of quality for their inexpensive price point.

Maybelline's latest urban image is a positive step, as many of their latest launches have been innovative without resorting to "been-there, done-that" gimmicks. Smart shoppers will note the similarities of a few of Maybelline’s formulas to products from high-end brands that are also owned by parent company L’Oreal. That just goes to show conscientious shopping can really save you money—without sacrificing quality or performance.
