This is a dual-ended brow pencil that applies a smooth line with a soft, semi-transparent finish, which definitely helps to avoid an overly drawn-on look. (Harsh, overdrawn brows can really add years to your face!) However, this is a somewhat wide, creamy pencil that needs sharpening, so it doesn’t deliver the most accurate line, and keeping it sharpened to a fine point is a chore. A nice touch, however, is the spoolie brush included on the other end of the pencil, which works well to groom and blend brows. Note that this pencil does come in a flattering Auburn shade—a rare find for redheads among brow pencils!

Pros:
  • Soft, semi-transparent finish doesn’t look too harsh.,
  • Spoolie brush helps to groom and blend brows.
  • Comes in four shades, including a flattering Auburn.
Cons:
  • Wide tip and creamy texture makes precise application difficult.
  • Needs routine sharpening.

Maybelline is one of the best-known and most recognized mass-market makeup lines in the world—it's available in 90 countries. Throughout its long history, which began in 1915 when T. L. Wilson founded the company and named it after his sister, Mabel, and Vaseline (which he combined with coal dust to concoct a mascara for her), the company has prided itself on bringing innovative products to the marketplace. L'Oreal purchased the company in early 1996 and that's when things really started getting much better. Both companies specialize in offering a large selection of lipsticks, nail polishes, and mascaras, and many of their foundations have the same strengths and weaknesses (smooth textures and finishes plus the inclusion of sunscreens that are often without much-needed UVA-protecting ingredients).

The powders, several mascaras, pencils, matte-finish concealers, and Superstay Lipcolor are impressive and inexpensive. Although L'Oreal remains the more sophisticated and refined of the two lines (and now they have credible products, not just sleek ads, to back this assertion), Maybelline's latest urban image is a positive step, as many of their latest launches have been innovative without resorting to "been-there, done-that" gimmicks. Price-wise, Maybelline is the least expensive of the L'Oreal-owned cosmetic lines (which also includes Lancome, Biotherm, Vichy, and Kiehl’s), and smart shoppers will note the similarities among brands that, with conscientious shopping, can really save you money without sacrificing quality or performance.

Terrible replacement for the light blonde define a brow!
    • Maybelline discontinued the define a brow light blonde color and replied that this was the replacement. This pencil is sticky and hard to apply. The light blonde color is too dark and looks fake once on. It is also a plastic pencil and is hard to sharpen. So frustrated with it and still looking for the replacement.

    Brow Pencil
    • When I first bought this product I was happy with the results. I found it easy to shape my almost non existent brows (after some practice). I was dismayed at the "instructions"-or lack there of. I even brought the product back to where I purchased it due to the fact it would not rotate to get additonal pencil out. The manager then told me you have to sharpen it! What a surprise-It is fine now. It would have been a nice touch to put that important piece of information somewhere. On the whole :-)

    How does it work?
    • I like the product but I was unable to operate it to get more of the pencil out. I kept twisting if that is how it works and no more appeared. Not a good value if all you get is the initial tip.
