If you’ve avoided long-wearing lipcolor in the past because it was either too dry or too slick, Maybelline’s Superstay 24 may be the product you’ve been waiting for. Not only does the color stay put, but also the base coat feels wonderful going on, and the clear coat is a low-shine balm rather than the typical gloss.

Packaged in a dual-ended tube, the base coat’s slanted sponge-tip applicator is extra long for precise application, which is so important with long-wearing color. The base coat’s texture is thin and has plenty of slip, making it easy to evenly distribute the richly pigmented color. As the base coat sets (which takes about two minutes), the color remains true, and the balm top coat doesn’t add too much shine, just comfortable moisture, which you can reapply throughout the day.

The 20+ flattering shades are all very true to the packaging, but we were especially impressed with Reliable Raspberry and Perpetual Plum for their universally flattering results.

As for the boast of 24-hour wear, don’t count on it—you have to reapply the lip balm repeatedly. In terms of the color, we did get eight full hours of wear (including through meals), and it held up beautifully, with little breakdown or movement to the outer edges of the lips. Even better, a makeup remover makes quick work of this at the end of the day. All told, an excellent long-wearing lips color from Maybelline!

Maybelline is one of the best-known and most recognized mass-market makeup lines in the world—it's available in 90 countries. Throughout its long history, which began in 1915 when T. L. Wilson founded the company and named it after his sister, Mabel, and Vaseline (which he combined with coal dust to concoct a mascara for her), the company has prided itself on bringing innovative products to the marketplace. L'Oreal purchased the company in early 1996 and that's when things really started getting much better. Both companies specialize in offering a large selection of lipsticks, nail polishes, and mascaras, and many of their foundations have the same strengths and weaknesses (smooth textures and finishes plus the inclusion of sunscreens that are often without much-needed UVA-protecting ingredients).

The powders, several mascaras, pencils, matte-finish concealers, and Superstay Lipcolor are impressive and inexpensive. Although L'Oreal remains the more sophisticated and refined of the two lines (and now they have credible products, not just sleek ads, to back this assertion), Maybelline's latest urban image is a positive step, as many of their latest launches have been innovative without resorting to "been-there, done-that" gimmicks. Price-wise, Maybelline is the least expensive of the L'Oreal-owned cosmetic lines (which also includes Lancome, Biotherm, Vichy, and Kiehl’s), and smart shoppers will note the similarities among brands that, with conscientious shopping, can really save you money without sacrificing quality or performance.

    Just What It Says
    • Really lasts without drying your lips. Applies smoothly, never strays, stays just where you put it. Inexpensive. I don't care for the shimmer in many of the new colors, doesn't seem to go on as evenly, but it's still a great lipstick, highly recommend.

It's not as good as CoverGirl Outlast
    • I wear long wearing lip colors exclusively & have tried them all. Maybelline is good, it goes on a bit lighter than Outlast, but it doesn't last as long. The top coats are identical. I don't care for the housing with color on one end and the top coat on the other, If I put it in my purse the top coat side always falls out. The biggest con for Superstay is lack of color selection..Many of the hues are overly bright or dark. Cover Girl has a great range of colors for any skin tone. It Wins!

    My favorite long-wearing lipstick
    • The base coat applies easily and dries to a slightly tacky finish, but applying the top coat takes care of that. The color doesn't crack or feel gritty and stands up to anything but greasy food. The colors are subtle and beautiful too. It does not wear 24 hours, but it does stay on comfortably all day as long as I reapply the topcoat once in a while.
