Review Overview

Mederma is back with their allegedly miraculous onion extract, although this time it’s supposed to banish stretch marks. They must have missed that benefit when they first launched Mederma claiming only to improve scars. We suspect the company discovered that most women don’t think of scars and stretch marks as the same thing, so they changed the name to attract those consumers. Sadly, many women will be seduced by this marketing contrivance.

Aside from mixed research showing the onion extract ingredient in Mederma does and doesn’t work, here’s why it can’t work for this concern: stretch marks are composed of broken bands of elastin. As a key component of skin’s support structure, elastin isn’t easily repaired once it has been damaged to the point where a stretch mark has formed. Other than tretinoin, as a generic and as the active ingredient in Renova and other brands, there is nothing you can topically apply to improve the appearance of stretch marks.

Mederma claims they have clinical proof that their Stretch Marks Therapy works, but that research was funded by Mederma and was not independent in the least. On the other hand, there are several independent studies that show that it doesn’t work and a couple of studies showing it does, but not necessarily for stretch marks.

If stretch marks are your concern, try prescription tretinoin and plain Vaseline (or another emollient moisturizer) before anything from Mederma.

Hint: despite anecdotal evidence, applying cocoa butter to the stomach during pregnancy does not prevent stretch marks.

Brand Overview

Mederma At-A-Glance

Strengths: None, unless you want to hang your hopes on anecdotal evidence.

Weaknesses: There is no research proving that the "active" ingredient in Mederma works as claimed.

Selling products that promise to get rid of scars has become big business. Given how many people suffer from scars (be they from acne, wounds, or even stretch marks), and given how hard it is to get rid of them, it isn't surprising that Mederma is still going strong, touting its ability to reduce the appearance of scars of all types, including hypertrophic and keloidal (both examples of raised scars that are a source of concern for many people).
