Eyeshadow palettes offer a great way to mix and match various shades for a range of looks, and that's the appeal of NARS' NARSissist L'Amour, Toujours L'Amour Eyeshadow Palette (what a name!). For the most part, this palette lives up to expectations, albeit with one drawback that keeps it just out of striking range of earning our top rating.

NARSissist L'Amour, Toujours L'Amour (which translates to "Love, Always Love") comes in the brand's standard sleek black packaging. Specifically, a mirrored compact that holds 12 shades of powder eyeshadow. (Bonus: These shades are all brand new to the NARS collection, so no need to worry about already owning them.)

The top four shades are larger in size than the bottom eight shades; the larger shades include neutral beige, gold, brown, and charcoal, all colors designed to be used more frequently than the smaller eight "accent" shades. Most of the shades are actually fairly neutral, save for a bright copper and a deep blue that are among the accents. Various finishes are also in the mix, from satin to shimmer, with four mattes as well.

Across the board, the initial issue with these shadows (and the reason they didn't earn a higher rating) is that their application is quite sheer to start. A single swipe of any of the 12 shades, no matter their color or texture, results in a light wash of color on lids. Even using a primer underneath, the initial application doesn't yield much color payoff. We like that the colors are buildable, but you have to take care when applying multiple layers of the shimmer shades, as some fallout can occur.

Once applied, however, these shadows are standouts when it comes to performance. The fragrance-free formulas wore well throughout a standard workday without fading or flaking, and there was minimal creasing without primer. When we went to take off our makeup at the end of the day, the shadows appeared nearly as smooth as when we first put them on! Impressive? You bet!

The shades are workable for a wide range of skin tones, and offer enough neutral options that everyday basic eye looks are simple to put together. The small number of brighter colors offer a nice accent to an eye look (as they're intended to do), and mean this is a palette than can easily transfer your look from day to night without the need for additional products.

Overall, the NARS NARSissist L'Amour, Toujours L'Amour palette has a lot to offer. Once you get past the initial sheer application and if you layer carefully, it's a palette that performs well, and is one we can definitely set a loving gaze on!

Pros:
  • Colors are buildable.
  • Shadows wear well without fading, flaking, and with minimal creasing.
  • Results look just-applied even several hours later.
  • 12 new workable shades that offer wearable neutrals and brighter highlight shades.
  • Fragrance free.
Cons:
  • Initial application is quite sheer.

Brand Overview

NARS At-A-Glance

Frenchman Francois Nars has been painting the faces of New York's top models since arriving in the United States in 1984. Their images and his handiwork have been seen on the covers of countless fashion magazines, most notably Vogue and Elle. As the story often goes for the talented makeup artists who have become celebrities in their own right, Nars became frustrated with the state of available makeup and, surprise, another cosmetic line was born.

Beginning (as Bobbi Brown did) by launching a small collection of lipsticks in 1994, the clamor for the colors was incredible, and demand for more NARS products from the artist grew. Shortly thereafter an entire product line followed, gaining attention with vibrant, deeply pigmented colors, sleek, tactile-enhanced packaging and risqué shade names.

As an overview, NARS makeup has many strengths—it reaches its zenith with blushes, tinted moisturizer, foundations, brushes, and lipsticks. If you’re a fan of bold colors, you’ll find them here, and the brand offers consistently impressive foundations and concealers. NARS consistently impresses when it comes to offering a wide range of shades to suit nearly any skin tone.

Where NARS often falls short is in the amount of fragrance added to many of their skincare formulas. In some cases, the amount and specific fragrance ingredients chosen outweigh the potential benefits, so be sure to double check their review before buying. Overall, NARS offers a lot to love, and if you don’t mind splurging a bit (as their prices can be on the spendy side) there are quite a few makeup picks that come with our highest recommendations.

Strengths: Superior foundations and foundation shade options; excellent blushes; splurge-worthy lipsticks; beautiful bronzers and consistently impressive color products.

Weaknesses: Can be expensive; a few skincare formulas contain high amounts of fragrance.
