Review Overview

A cosmetic company that develops an SPF 10 product is behind the times because the formulators should know better (and be up on current regulations) when formulating sun-care products. You're better off not including sunscreen in your lip balm than bothering to formulate one with a below-standard SPF value of 10. This does include avobenzone for UVA protection, but SPF 15 is the minimum number you should be looking for.

This is otherwise a basic, soft-textured lip balm that works to keep lips smooth. It has a subtle red tint, sort of like the color you get from cherry Chapstick. This would earn a higher rating if the SPF value was 15 or more.

Brand Overview

Nivea At-A-Glance

Strengths: Budget-friendly; good makeup removers; a gentle scrub; some worthwhile lip balms.

Weaknesses: Several boring formulas; no products to treat breakouts or lighten skin discolorations; problematic toners; disappointing self-tanners; the anti-cellulite products are a joke.

Nivea is a globally known brand owned by Beiersdorf, the same company behind department-store brand La Prairie and drugstore mainstay Eucerin. Among those three brands, Nivea's product selection is the weakest (which isn't saying much, because none of these lines have much of anything to offer skin). For Nivea, uninspired formulas abound, presenting limited options unless you have normal to dry skin, and even those have exceptionally inelegant formulas. The enduring popularity of this line has more to do with advertising and perhaps tradition (it has been around a long time) than with what any researcher would consider state-of-the-art.

In mid-2010 Nivea re-launched most of their Visage (facial care) products on the web site drugstore.com. These products present a few well formulated, inexpensive options that are worth your attention. For more information about Nivea, owned by Beiersdorf, call (800) 227-4703 or visit www.nivea.com.

Wrong review

This must have been reformulated, or this is the wrong review for this product, because I'm looking at my stick of this lip balm right now and it is NOT tinted and has broad spectrum SPF 15. The ingredients listed are also wrong? This is a good lip balm, especially if you're looking for one with broad spectrum SPF that isn't overly flavored or smells like suntan lotion. Only real downside is a tiny amount of added fragrance (that you can't even smell).

Hello, and thanks for your comments - it's very possible this has been reformulated, so we will check out the new formula and adjust our review as needed!

Gets the job done

The formula is basic, but good; it goes on like butter, leaving lips soft and moist, with a pleasant, satin sheen. I picked up this when I went to Walgreen's to get another tube Blistex's Deep Renewal, which includes CoQ10 in its formula, but found that avobenzone was no longer listed as an active ingredient for that product. Nivea's Kiss of Smoothness was on sale and does have avobenzone listed as an active ingredient. By the way - this is now with SPF 15!
