Review Overview

This is an outstanding, blendable lipstain that goes on moist without grabbing unevenly or immediately bleeding into lines around the mouth. Other drugstore lip stains don't come close to the performance, color selection, or feel of NYC Color's Smooch Proof, and the price is almost unbelievable given the product's superior performance.

Note: Although this fragranced formula lists alcohol as its third ingredient, we suspect the amount is too low to pose a risk of irritation, so its inclusion did not negatively impact this product's rating.

Pros:
  • Pen-style packaging with a magic-marker tip makes accurate application easy.
  • You can get up to 6 hours of wear.
  • The color doesn't bleed, grab, or travel around on lips.
  • Shades are sheer enough to be versatile and you can layer them for more intensity.
  • This lip stain works well under lip balm.
  • The price makes this an absolute bargain.
Cons:
  • None.

Brand Overview

N.Y.C. At-A-Glance

Strengths: Inexpensive; the mineral makeup holds its own against more expensive competitors; good finds for powders, eyeshadows, and lip glosses; several outstanding best buys, including lipstick, mascara, pressed powder, and brow pencil; most products are packaged so you can easily see the color.

Weaknesses: Some really inferior products; the makeup brushes really disappoint; the lip-plumping gloss is filled to the brim with potent irritants; limited options for foundation and concealer; several average pencils.

The N.Y.C. (New York Color) brand clearly wants to align itself with all of the excitement and pulsating action of the Big Apple—think Sex and the City or any of the notable fashion magazines whose home is in the heart of Manhattan. It would have been a clever marketing maneuver if New York Color had delivered, but despite a few stellar products, the line overall is comparatively tame and relatively ordinary. Sexy product names and beguiling makeup descriptions don't equal great makeup. Forget Sex and the City, this is more like a new Woody Allen film—a few surprises, but predictably familiar in the end.

The most appealing part of this line is rock-bottom prices; everything is less than $10, and several items are less than $3 (but that's still not as rock bottom at E.L.F., where $1 per item is standard). Although this isn't the cream of the crop for makeup, there are more than enough inexpensive okay options to make it worthwhile for you to check if it's being sold at your local drugstore. Just keep in mind that not everything N.Y.C. offers is "prestige quality" or the least bit fashion-forward. Put another way: New Yorkers are a notoriously tough group to please, and as a whole N.Y.C. doesn't do enough to make an on-the-go city girl slow down and see what she's missing. In fact, shopping this line without some advance information may lead to resounding disappointments, and that's never the goal. On the flipside, knowing what to zero in on will not only save you money, but also connect you with a product that stands a very good chance of leaving you wondering why anyone would pay more.

You're most likely to find N.Y.C. at Target and Rite Aid. Regrettably, testers are not available, but both of the aforementioned retailers have a good return policy if you save your receipt.

Happy with my impulse buy!

My first lip "stain". I used the pointy tip to line then filled in using the side. It applies quite evenly and leaves time to blend before setting to a matte finish. Wear time is far longer than traditional lipstick and I didn't find it drying. No smudging or transfer either. The limited color selection offered at the store made "Rock On Ruby" the only possibility for me. It's a deep red, deeper than I usually wear but I like the product enough to track down other shades. Cheap but impressive!

Average

I bought several of the Smooch Proof Lipstains when they were on sale. Endless Spice is a pleasant brownish brick color, but most tend towards a purple hue. Persistently Pink is the lightest pink in the bunch, but unfortunately none seem to last long enough for me to consider them a true lip stain. In addition, the product seems to run out quite fast. I ended up giving my pink to my five year old daughter because I knew it was almost imperceptible. In this case, you get what you pay for.

Not for me

I can't even get the color onto my lips. It just scrapes along doing nothing, but irritating them. I tried two different colors to see if it was a fluke.

I'm a Big Fan

My favorite color of this lip stain is Endless Spice, but I have several tubes in different colors. I love that they go on semi-sheer and dry quickly. I use them under lip gloss. When the lip gloss wears away after a couple of hours( the way lip gloss does), I'm still left with a beautiful color that lasts several more hours. These are some of the best bargains at the drugstore!

Dries too fast, odd sweet taste

I bought this stain in color "494 Smooch Proof" which looked like a medium berry/coral color based on the pen color. The stain applied much darker and redder than expected with just one application, dried almost immediately making it hard to blend evenly, was so matte that it made my lips look dry, had an odd sweet taste, and only lasted about 3 - 4 hours. Not worth the price even though it is cheap.

Thank goodness it's inexpensive

I find this product very drying and find that I HAVE to wear a lip balm to keep my lips moist. I was lucky if if I got 3 hours of wear. I must have ticklish lips because that is exactly what happens when I apply this. I agree that it does not bleed.

a must-have for your lip collection!

This is an amazing lip stain. It doesn't dry out your lips, is easy to apply, and delivers an attractive matte wash of pigmented color. I have this in Never Ending Nude, a beautiful nude color with reddish, mauvey undertones, and Persistent Pink, a cool-toned bright pink. With the bargain price, I'll buy all the shades!

Nice, affordable, low-maintenance Product

I have this in "Forever Freesia." The stain is nice, soft matte and quite natural-looking. It stings a little at initial application (probably the alcohol content) but dries down quickly and wears comfortably. Lips feel naked, a little balm or gloss makes a nice accent. I'll enjoy this for a casual weekend look with tinted moisturizer, cheek stain, and a dusting of powder.
