Review Overview

All the Butter Gloss shades are named after desserts, and with a beauty bargain like this, you may find yourself going back for seconds! This lightly fragranced gloss has a moisturizing, non-sticky texture and comes in a lovely array of bright, but sheer, colors, as well as some neutrals.

The wand applicator is easy to use, and, as with any lip gloss, it can be applied alone, with a lipliner, or over your favorite lipstick. This lip gloss's only potential drawback is that it contains fragrance.

  • Moisturizing, non-sticky texture.
  • Easy-to-use applicator.
  • Sheer shades are available in brights and neutrals.
  • Pairs well with lipstick.
  • Contains fragrance, when lots of lip glosses are fragrance-free, which is ultimately better for lips.

Brand Overview

NYX Cosmetics At-A-Glance

Strengths: NYX provides complete ingredient lists on its website; inexpensive for such quality makeup that rivals department store brands (yes, even M.A.C.); superior blush, gloss, and eyeshadow; several excellent mascaras.

Weaknesses: Many products are available only from the company's website, which means you can't see or test the colors in person (and the company doesn't offer samples); disappointing foundation primers.

This small Los Angeles–based makeup line was founded in 1999 by a woman named Toni Ko. The company's Web site is vague about Ko's background, merely stating that she developed an interest in cosmetics as a teenager (you know, just like about 99.9% of teenage women) and wanted to create her own line of cosmetics. Ko's goal was to produce high-quality products at affordable prices, and that's the draw of NYX (pronounced "nicks") Cosmetics. We are pleased to report that, for the most part, Ko succeeded in her childhood dream.

It is important to note that this line offers a full selection of makeup products, from foundations to lip gloss. However, the only place to access everything NYX Cosmetics has to offer is their Web site. The Ulta chain is the largest distributor of NYX Cosmetics products in the United States, but they carry a smaller selection of NYX products. The good news is that most of the few NYX products Ulta stocks are impressive, especially the powder eyeshadows, which compete evenly with eyeshadows that cost a lot more.

NYX Cosmetics customer service number is (866) 699-1004 or you can visit www.nyxcosmetics.com.

Nice Subtle Shine

I saw this line at Target and was not familiar with it. I took a chance and went for the Vanilla Creme Pie color, which adds nice color to the lips without being obvious or sticky. I have a problem with dry lips, yet this butter stays on nicely and has a great smell. At the price, I'm sure I'll get more. I'm 55 and the butter does not look too young or shiny for us mature ladies!

Favorite bargain lippie of all time

I bought this in my absolute favorite color called Creme Brulee. Hands down the perfect color i can put on without a mirror and know it looks amazing! Definitely not sticky and mixes great sith my other lip products.

These are fabulous!

I love these, especially for the price. They are highly pigmented and also very sheer - you control the intensity by how much you apply or blot off. But the colors are really nice, they have great shine, and are moisturizing. They don't last for a really long time, which is OK for me, and they do wipe off if you don't like the color (I tried all three before deciding on what I was wearing for the night). I think they're great and I want to try more colors (Devil's Food Cake is fabulous).

love it! the smell is actually a plus!!

how is the fragrance bad if it smells super duper nice? its like a sweet sweet candy/dessert, cant really explain. I LOVE THE SMELL PAULA!! finish is a tad too sheer and glossy to my liking, but its hydrating and not sticky at all. love this.

Not for me

This lip gloss doesn't work for my 50 yr old lips. It is highly pigmented - it is not a sheer wash of color - so if you pick an unflattering color you are stuck with it. That aside, it almost seems like applying a thin, glossy paint that emphasizes every line in my lips. It feels nice on but not flattering for older lips. Younger women may find it to their liking. I'd prefer a thicker color that is less opaque.
