For a lot of people, concealer can be among the most important parts of their makeup routine. The best among them can take years off your appearance and make it look like you got a full night's sleep, even if you didn't! NYX's Gotcha Covered Concealer claims it "always has your back" with full coverage that erases imperfections without creasing. We found that while there is a lot to like about this concealer, it isn't without its flaws (more on that in a moment).

Gotcha Covered Concealer comes in a plastic squeeze tube with a twist-off top. The texture of this fragrance-free formula is thick, creamy, and emollient, thanks in part to the coconut oil included. The texture means it's best suited to those who have normal to dry skin; if you have oily or combination skin, you'll likely find this far too dewy to stay put all day (it also makes this a less-than-ideal option for covering blemishes).

While Gotcha Covered Concealer has an easy dispensing method, when it comes to application there's a bit of a learning curve. A little goes a long way, as we found out! The best way to apply it is to squeeze out small dots of the concealer onto your finger or a concealer brush, then dab them onto the undereye area (which is where it works best). With your finger or brush, softly tap the concealer until it blends into skin.

This results in natural-looking, slightly dewy medium-to-full coverage of dark circles. If you apply a lot (as we did the first time we tried it), the concealer is harder to blend and slides throughout the day, even if you use powder over it. When we put on too much, by the end of the day we found concealer in our waterline—far from where it was originally applied!

Once you have the technique down of applying Gotcha Covered, it does perform well overall. We found it didn't fade throughout the day, though it did crease a bit toward the end of its wear time (about 8 hours). Though the shade range is relatively small, the variety is good— with attractive options for very fair to deep skin tones.

Overall NYX's Gotcha Covered Concealer is a good option if your skin falls into the drier range, and it comes at a great price, too!

Pros:
  • Natural-looking, slightly dewy medium-to-full coverage of dark circles.
  • Doesn't fade during its wear time.
  • Shade range is small but well-edited.
  • Fragrance-free.
Cons:
  • Emollient texture means it isn't ideal for covering up blemishes.
  • There's a learning curve to application (despite claims that it's "highly blendable").
  • Creases toward the end of its wear time.

Brand Overview

NYX Cosmetics At-A-Glance

Strengths: NYX provides complete ingredient lists on its website; inexpensive for such quality makeup that rivals department store brands (yes, even M.A.C.); superior blush, gloss, and eyeshadow; several excellent mascaras.

Weaknesses: Many products are available only from the company's website, which means you can't see or test the colors in person (and the company doesn't offer samples); disappointing foundation primers.

This small Los Angeles–based makeup line was founded in 1999 by a woman named Toni Ko. The company's Web site is vague about Ko's background, merely stating that she developed an interest in cosmetics as a teenager (you know, just like about 99.9% of teenage women) and wanted to create her own line of cosmetics. Ko's goal was to produce high-quality products at affordable prices, and that's the draw of NYX (pronounced "nicks") Cosmetics. We are pleased to report that, for the most part, Ko succeeded in her childhood dream.

It is important to note that this line offers a full selection of makeup products, from foundations to lip gloss. However, the only place to access everything NYX Cosmetics has to offer is their Web site. The Ulta chain is the largest distributor of NYX Cosmetics products in the United States, but they carry a smaller selection of NYX products. The good news is that most of the few NYX products Ulta stocks are impressive, especially the powder eyeshadows, which compete evenly with eyeshadows that cost a lot more.
