Review Overview

Hot Singles are touted as highly pigmented eyeshadows that come in 80+ shades for any occasion. We discovered that the level of pigmentation actually varies by shade, but for the most part you can count on saturated color (especially with the deeper shades). The brighter/trendier colors are the exception as those tend to go on more sheer, taking extra effort to build color, but that's not a total deal breaker since the pressed powder texture is conducive to layering for more pigmentation.

There are plenty of attractive colors to choose from in shimmer, metallic and matte finishes, but watch out for the glittery shades as those have a slightly coarse texture and can flake a bit (which is pretty typical of glitter-flecked shadows in general). Otherwise you can count on super-smooth blendability and durable wear throughout the day—all wonderful traits for such a low price!

In addition to classic colors you'll also find trendy hues, including neons, but as mentioned above, those shades don't always look as vibrant as they appear in the compact. Fortunately, stores such as Ulta (a major retailer of NYX Cosmetics) have testers so you can try before you buy.

All in all, these fragrance-free shadows perform well, and at this price you can pick up several shadows without breaking the bank. As an added bonus, the matte shades in neutral to brown and black tones also work convincingly for filling in eyebrows or for use as powder eyeliner. Gotta love a dual purpose product!

  • Pressed powder texture blends well and can be layered for more saturated color.
  • Abundant shade range offers mix of classic and trendy colors.
  • Most shades go on richly pigmented.
  • Durable wear.
  • Bargain price!
  • Glitter shades flake.

Brand Overview

NYX Cosmetics At-A-Glance

Strengths: NYX provides complete ingredient lists on its website; inexpensive for such quality makeup that rivals department store brands (yes, even M.A.C.); superior blush, gloss, and eyeshadow; several excellent mascaras.

Weaknesses: Many products are available only from the company's website, which means you can't see or test the colors in person (and the company doesn't offer samples); disappointing foundation primers.

This small Los Angeles–based makeup line was founded in 1999 by a woman named Toni Ko. The company's Web site is vague about Ko's background, merely stating that she developed an interest in cosmetics as a teenager (you know, just like about 99.9% of teenage women) and wanted to create her own line of cosmetics. Ko's goal was to produce high-quality products at affordable prices, and that's the draw of NYX (pronounced "nicks") Cosmetics. We are pleased to report that, for the most part, Ko succeeded in her childhood dream.

It is important to note that this line offers a full selection of makeup products, from foundations to lip gloss. However, the only place to access everything NYX Cosmetics has to offer is their Web site. The Ulta chain is the largest distributor of NYX Cosmetics products in the United States, but they carry a smaller selection of NYX products. The good news is that most of the few NYX products Ulta stocks are impressive, especially the powder eyeshadows, which compete evenly with eyeshadows that cost a lot more.

NYX Cosmetics customer service number is (866) 699-1004 or you can visit www.nyxcosmetics.com.

These puppies FLY off the shelves because they are so fabulous!

I just started using these a few weeks ago. They apply very easily, blend well, and stay on for at least my 11 hour work-day. I only purchased 3 light matte colors, Lace (36), Naked Truth (37), and Stiletto (38), so I can’t speak to the glitter issue. I can tell that they stay on well even without a eye primer (I did a test, 1 eyelid with and 1 eyelid without primer). I also put them up against my MAC shadows and would say they hold their own. Start with matte, then branch out. Have fun!!!

Favorite eyeshadow

NYX eyeshadow singles may be my favorite makeup discovery ever (so thanks, PC!). These eyeshadows have a great, soft texture, rich color payoff, the matte shades are lovely, and they apply like a dream if you have good brushes. Honestly, I prefer these to Laura Mercier and MAC shadows. They're that good. Go buy them now.
