Color us impressed! NYX The Skinny Mascara is advertised as a mascara with a super-slim, super-small brush that can coat every single one of your lashes, even on the lower lash line, to add curl, definition and a little length. Good news: It lives up to every one of its claims, and for that reason it earns our highest four-star rating.

The fragrance-free Skinny Mascara comes in a standard mascara tube, though slimmer than the average size. Twist off the wand from the tube and you'll see what might be the smallest mascara brush you've ever come across (it certainly is the smallest we've seen—even smaller than Maybelline's Lash Discovery Mascara). The brush itself is straight, with a small spiral of bristles. The size might make it appear as if this can't do much for your lashes, but this formula certainly delivers and we were pleasantly surprised that we were able to reach lashes right at their base for maximum mascara coverage.

The bristles are dense and in a spiral, comb-like design to glide through lashes, separating them with ease and coating them with mascara from root to tip. The formula itself is somewhat wet, so there can be minor clumping if you get a lot of it on the brush head, though this is easily brushed off lashes.

The ability of this brush head design to get to the roots of the lashes lends a slight eyeliner effect at the base of the eyelids, as advertised. We found applying The Skinny Mascara to our lower lashes was just as simple and precise, with no mascara winding up under our eyes.

As far as performance, this adds definition, slight length, and even a bit of curl for an attractive everyday mascara look (those looking for something a bit theatrical will need to look elsewhere). The Skinny Mascara wears well throughout the day without flaking or smudging, and is water resistant, yet comes off in a snap with a cleanser or makeup remover.

All told, this is a great mascara with a unique yet effective brush, good performance, and best of all, it's a true beauty bargain!

Pros:
  • Thin, slim mascara brush has the ability to coat all lashes from root to tip.
  • Adds definition, slight length and curl to lashes.
  • Doesn't flake or smudge throughout the day.
  • Water resistant.
  • Easy to remove with a cleanser or makeup remover.
Cons:
  • None.

Our ultra-skinny mascara brush is perfect for coating hard to reach lashes from root to tip—even along the bottom lash line! Finally, the smallest, thinnest lashes can get extra special attention too. The water resistant formula and micro brush work together to create the appearance of long, beautifully defined lashes.

Brand Overview

NYX Cosmetics At-A-Glance

Strengths: NYX provides complete ingredient lists on its website; inexpensive for such quality makeup that rivals department store brands (yes, even M.A.C.); superior blush, gloss, and eyeshadow; several excellent mascaras.

Weaknesses: Many products are available only from the company's website, which means you can't see or test the colors in person (and the company doesn't offer samples); disappointing foundation primers.

This small Los Angeles–based makeup line was founded in 1999 by a woman named Toni Ko. The company's Web site is vague about Ko's background, merely stating that she developed an interest in cosmetics as a teenager (you know, just like about 99.9% of teenage women) and wanted to create her own line of cosmetics. Ko's goal was to produce high-quality products at affordable prices, and that's the draw of NYX (pronounced "nicks") Cosmetics. We are pleased to report that, for the most part, Ko succeeded in her childhood dream.

It is important to note that this line offers a full selection of makeup products, from foundations to lip gloss. However, the only place to access everything NYX Cosmetics has to offer is their Web site. The Ulta chain is the largest distributor of NYX Cosmetics products in the United States, but they carry a smaller selection of NYX products. The good news is that most of the few NYX products Ulta stocks are impressive, especially the powder eyeshadows, which compete evenly with eyeshadows that cost a lot more.
