Complete All Day Moisturizer with Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 15 for normal skin is a good daytime option for its intended skin type and also for slightly dry skin. The lightweight lotion spreads easily, provides a bit of hydration, and, most important, offers broad spectrum sun protection that includes avobenzone for reliable UVA screening.
In terms of beneficial extras, this reasonably priced moisturizer with sunscreen contains the cell-communicating ingredient niacinamide alone with lesser amounts of skin-conditioning agent panthenol and vitamin E (tocopheryl acetate).
The lack of repairing ingredients and anti-irritants kept this from earning a higher rating, as did the inclusion of fragrance (which lingers), as we're concerned that the fragrance might make the active ingredients more likely to cause a sensitized reaction, particularly when applied around the eyes. Actually, don't apply this around the eyes—if one area of the face absolutely doesn't need fragrance, it's the eye area!
Last, this formula works well under makeup and, if you have oily areas, it won't leave them looking too shiny nor does this feel slick once it sets. Its rather pleasant aesthetics plus broad spectrum sun protection and easy application make this an overall good option to check out—but we wish Olay had left out the fragrance.
Note: This product was recently downgraded from our top rating to three stars, which is considered good. The reason for the change is due to the prevailing recommendation that your daytime sun protection product be rated SPF 30 or greater. This revised recommendation is due to the fact that most people are not applying sunscreen liberally enough to earn the stated level of protection on the label; therefore, a higher SPF rating will be more advantageous. See the More Info section for additional details.
- Provides broad spectrum sun protection.
- Lightweight, easy-to-apply formula.
- Contains a handful of beneficial ingredients beyond the sunscreen actives.
- Inexpensive for such a large size!
- Fragranced formula's scent lingers and may make the active ingredients more likely to cause a sensitized reaction.
- Lacks skin-repairing and anti-irritant ingredients to truly make it "complete".
Sunscreen Downgraded Due to Low SPF (SPF 15-20): This product was recently downgraded from its previous rating to two stars, which is still considered average. The reason for the change is due to the prevailing recommendation that your daytime sun protection product be rated SPF 30 or greater, with SPF ratings between 25 and 30 falling into the acceptable range.
This revised recommendation is because most do not apply sunscreen liberally enough to earn the stated level of protection on the label; therefore, a higher SPF rating will be more advantageous.
While this sunscreen will provide the SPF number on the label and has UVA-protecting ingredients, no sunscreen with an SPF lower than 20 will rate higher than two stars in Beautypedia. Applying an SPF 15-rated sunscreen under a foundation, tinted moisturizer, or BB cream that offers broad-spectrum SPF 25+ will take far better care of your skin. This layering approach ensures your skin gets sufficient sun protection even if you're not applying liberally.
