Olay claims that its ProX Anti-Aging Nightly Purifying Micro-Peel can "exfoliate and renew skin's surface… for younger-looking skin in just five nights." Guess what? This fragrance free, leave-on glycolic acid (alpha hydroxy acid) exfoliant can do exactly what it says, thanks to great ingredients at the right pH—which is why it earns our highest rating!

ProX Anti-Aging Nightly Purifying Micro-Peel comes in frosted plastic bottle with a screw-top lid and an attached dropper. In a brilliant bit of packaging design, twisting off the lid causes a button at the top to pop up, auto-filling the dropper. When you depress the button, the product dispenses, then when you re-attach the lid the button goes back down. This makes application very convenient! We don't typically see such innovative packaging from Olay, and we hope it's a sign of things to come!

Note: It is best to store this exfoliant away from direct light. Even though it doesn't include many light-sensitive ingredients, it's a good idea to make sure this lasts as long as possible.

The product itself is a lightweight, slightly viscous water-based fluid that glides easily across skin and dries quickly to a silky finish. As good as it feels, where its strength truly lies is in its formula. This contains a high amount of glycolic acid (Olay doesn't say exactly how much, though since it is the third ingredient it could be as high as 10%), which can help skin appear younger, exactly as Olay claims. Glycolic acid's ability to exfoliate can result in the reduced appearance of wrinkles, sun damage, and it can even help skin increase its collagen production. For it to work best, though, it has to be at the right pH, and we're glad to say this product is at a pH (3.8) that will ensure it can exfoliate.

ProX Anti-Aging Nightly Purifying Micro-Peel also includes skin-conditioning agents like glycerin and panthenol, and anti-inflammatory ingredients like allantoin and calendula extract. What this doesn't include (yay, Olay!) is fragrance or irritants, which is what puts this product over the top when it comes to good skincare options.

Overall, ProX Anti-Aging Nightly Purifying Micro-Peel is an excellent exfoliant option for all skin types, even the breakout-prone, because of its winning formula and convenient packaging.

Pros:
  • Packaged in a container that makes application easy and convenient.
  • Lightweight, silky feel.
  • Contains a good amount of glycolic acid at a pH that will ensure exfoliation.
  • Fragrance-free.
Cons:
  • None.

Brand Overview

Olay At-A-Glance

Starting decades ago with the now-classic Oil of Olay, this brand now offers an extensive range of skin-care products sold at drugstores and mass-market stores. Today's Olay lineup for those concerned about staving off the effects of aging skin is impressive, comprising their Regenerist, Pro X, and Total Effects lines. All of these (and several other Olay products) contain the B vitamin niacinamide. As you might expect, the claims made for it are inflated, but niacinamide is a very helpful ingredient for all skin types, capable of exerting multiple benefits.

In fact, perhaps the biggest complaint about Olay is that there are a number of repetitive formulas within and between the sub-brands make this line confusing and tricky to shop! Still, there is a lot to like about this drugstore stalwart, with its main drawback being a few formulas containing fragrance or other ingredients that have the potential to cause irritation.
