Review Overview

This cleanser is very similar to PanOxyl’s PanOxyl Acne Facial Wash, 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide, but has a higher concentration of benzoyl peroxide. The same review applies: Benzoyl peroxide is a brilliant anti-acne superstar. It’s especially effective when included in a non-irritating leave-on product, but there also is research showing it has benefit even when in a cleanser.

For this product the inactive ingredients are listed in alphabetical order, a standard that’s allowed by the FDA for over-the-counter (OTC) drug products. I mentioned in the previous review that this was a strange formula, and that’s because it mixes drying detergent cleansing agent with oils, cornstarch, and AHAs. The oils help make the cleansing agents less of a problem but they impede rinsing. Meanwhile, the AHAs aren’t effective in a cleanser as because they are rinsed down the drain—besides, BHA (salicylic acid) is preferred when acne is the concern. This cleanser is not recommended because it is bound to confuse your skin while potentially making acne worse.

Claims

The rich, elegant lather of PanOxyl Acne Foaming Wash gently removes dirt and excess oil to cleanse and unclog pores, making it an excellent choice for the management of acne on the face, chest and back.

Ingredients

Active: Benzoyl Peroxide (10%), Other: Cetearyl Alcohol, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycerin, Glycolic Acid, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Lactic Acid, Methylparaben, Mineral Oil, Peg 14m, Potassium Lauryl Sulfate, Purified Water, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Pca, Titanium Dioxide, Zea Mays Starch (Corn)

Brand Overview

PanOxyl At-A-Glance

Strengths: Inexpensive.

Weaknesses: Some cleansers are in bar form; no BHA options for those struggling with acne.

This small line of anti-acne products is sold in many drugstores, sometimes positioned near the pharmacy. Knowing that this line comes from a pharmaceutical company (Stiefel) that specializes in dermatology, the incomplete nature of what they offer consumers is very disappointing.
