Disclosure: Paula Begoun is creator of Beautypedia and founder of Paula's Choice Skincare products. Reviewing thousands of skincare and makeup products over the past 30 years, both on this site and in her best-selling books, Paula's mission has always been to help consumers find the best products possible for their skin. The Beautypedia Team proudly and unequivocally maintains this commitment. In addition, The Beautypedia Team reviews all products using the same rating standards and criteria, whether it is a Paula's Choice product or another brand.

Paula's Choice Skincare was established in 1995 when best-selling beauty author and consumer advocate Paula Begoun (known as The Cosmetics Cop) decided to develop her own products. Like most of us, she was fed up with products that overpromised results, cost a lot of money, and failed to deliver—or made matters worse!

As a natural evolution of Paula's personal mission to help consumers find the best products for their skin, the line has grown into an extensive range of skincare and makeup products that are formulated to meet the needs of almost every skin type and skin concern imaginable. From acne to wrinkles, oily skin, rosacea, large pores, eczema, redness, sagging, dry skin, and on and on, Paula's Choice offers a solution.

Paula's Choice Skincare stands apart from other cosmetics brands. The formulas contain only ingredients that have substantiated, published research showing they are beneficial and effective—so you get visible results. Stable packaging is another feature of the brand, using innovative, opaque, and air-tight or air-restrictive components that keep antioxidants and other light- and air-sensitive ingredients from breaking down (unlike jar packaging, which compromises what might otherwise be an effective formula). The line is also 100% fragrance-free, which is best for all skin types, especially for those with sensitive skin or rosacea.

From cleansers to broad-spectrum sunscreens to anti-aging serums to specialized treatments, Paula's Choice Skincare has you covered from head to toe with innovative, state-of-the-art products. The brand also offers professional-quality makeup products including concealer, foundation, eyeshadow, lipstick, and more. (Paula started out as a makeup artist so she definitely knows her way around a face!)

Paula's Choice Skincare does not test on animals and also takes an environmentally friendly approach by featuring minimalist, recyclable packaging. Another plus—the Customer Service team is among the best in the industry, offering a "100% satisfaction or your money back" guarantee.

Why are all Paula's Choice Skincare products rated highly? The Paula's Choice Skincare Team would not launch a product unless it was worthy of a high rating from The Beautypedia Team. Paula and The Beautypedia Team were researching and reviewing products long before Paula's Choice Skincare ever existed and consumers were constantly requesting a skincare brand that met all of Beautypedia's criteria. As a result, The Paula's Choice Skincare Team was created and uses the same research and criteria to formulate Paula's Choice products as The Beautypedia Team uses to review products.

About the Experts

The Beautypedia Research Team is dedicated to helping you find the absolute best products for your skin, using research-based criteria to review beauty products from an honest, balanced perspective. Each member of the team was personally trained by Paula Begoun herself.

Great product

Lovely cleanser, i only use a tiny pea size amount and that cleans my whole face and neck and is enough to get light makeup off, i find i have to use more or wash twice when i wear more makeup, and its difficult to get eyeliner off. I notice a definate improvement in blackheads after using too.

Triclosan!?

I ordered this as part of an anti-acne skin care regimen package. I'm disappointed to see that this product contains triclosan. This is especially surprising since Paula's Choice products are marketed as being safe and responsible to animals and the environment.

Paula's Choice Research Team Response

Hi Anthony! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. It is true that concerns have been raised regarding the environmental impact of triclosan, but as of now, there are no studies that indicate triclosan poses a specific risk to the environment. What is being discussed is what impact, if any, triclosan poses to the environment and whether this conflicts with current data. Such is the nature of scientific and medical research—always evolving (and that’s a good thing).

The FDA and Health Canada both have stated that the amount of triclosan present in waterways is, as of current research, not of an amount that poses a risk to humans or aquatic life (marine or plant)—hence the regulation limiting triclosan's use to specific levels in products is working as intended without evidence of environmental harm. The EPA has also concluded that based upon current research the “estimated concentrations of triclosan in surface water do not exceed concentrations of concern for acute risk for aquatic organisms and plants.” However, PC is absolutley concerned with the sustainability and impact our company has, so we keep a close eye on these factors.  - Nathan

Tingling after use...& not the good kind!

Unpleasant tingling sensation after use alleviated somewhat by my usual follow-up products (toner, etc). Boyfriend however didn't experience said tingling. My skin type: more or less normal, his: blemish-prone, dry.

Good cleanser with some drawbacks

This cleanser does not foam well, you need a quarter size amount and some vigorous hand rubbing to get enough foam. However, it cleans makeup well and does not make it feel dry afterward. You DO need about a quarter size to get face cleaned though. I don't see a HUGE difference in my blackheads but they are definitely better, and pores are smaller. However, I also use the 2% BHA liquid and the Skin Balancing Oil-Absorbing Mask by PC so the combination of the 3 could be making a difference.

SLS and chemicals

Interesting to note that this product contains a number of sulfates, synthetics and surfactants i.e. SLS, although it is still given a BEST rating while other brands with similar ingredients are criticized for using SLS. Kinda confusing. Soooo is SLS bad??

Paula's Choice Research Team Response

Hi, and thanks for your comments! The ingredient you're referring to in this case is sodium laureth sulfate, which is safe to use on skin and can be derived from coconut. You can find more information about it here: Sodium Laureth Sulfate. There's a lot of confusion because the very similarly named sodium lauryl sulfate is definitely not good for skin! More information about that ingredient can be found here: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. We hope this helps clarify things!

My favorite cleanser to date!

This has been my favorite cleanser to date! It works great with twice daily use and does not dry out my skin like other cleansers have. It works great pre-shave for guys! 6oz lasts when you use the recommended amount.

Nce but doesn't completely remove makeup

I like the texture and gentleness of this cleanser but it does not remove all of my makeup. I've tried washing twice (just using my hands) and still leaves makeup on my skin. Have not tried it with a wash cloth...assume that would help in removing all makeup. Also concerned about the ingredient castor oil as I have acne prone skin. I like this cleanser in all other aspects.

Clears ALL oil & greasiness

For those with greasy skin that is hard to clear. My forehead is extremely oily and this is the product to make my skin look and feel clean. I also use it on my oily and acne-prone chest. Remember, a little goes a long way. Rinses clean, too. Good job!
