Review Overview

Hydralight Shine-Free Daily Mineral Complex SPF 30 combines the mineral sunscreen actives titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in a silky, slightly fluid lotion that smoothes easily over skin, setting to a soft matte finish.

The formula works great under makeup, so you can forgo the foundation primer, and treats skin to a good mix of skin-repairing and antioxidant ingredients. Regarding the antioxidants, most are also well-known anti-irritants, making this a great option for sensitive, rosacea-affected skin.

On balance, this is best for normal to oily or combination skin prone to breakouts. The combined amount of mineral actives can leave a hint of a white cast, but most won't find it objectionable, especially if foundation is applied over it.

As with all Paula's Choice daytime moisturizers, this is fragrance-free.

  • Provides gentle, broad-spectrum sun protection.
  • Silky lotion provides light hydration and a lasting matte finish.
  • Antioxidants and skin-repairing ingredients replenish and fight signs of aging.
  • Fragrance-free.
  • Can leave a bit of a white cast if not thoroughly blended, which can be more pronounced on darker skin tones.
Paula's Choice Hydralight Shine-Free Daily Mineral Complex with SPF 30 with Antioxidants provides gentle, broad-spectrum mineral-based sun protection in a lightweight lotion that leaves a soft, powder-like, practically imperceptible finish. Its smooth texture applies easily and works beautifully around the eyes and under makeup. Soothing anti-irritants and antioxidants work to repair and strengthen skin so it looks and acts younger. With daily use, skin will resist and repair multiple signs of aging, while maintaining a shine-free appearance.

Disclosure: Paula Begoun is creator of Beautypedia and founder of Paula's Choice Skincare products. Reviewing thousands of skincare and makeup products over the past 30 years, both on this site and in her best-selling books, Paula's mission has always been to help consumers find the best products possible for their skin. The Beautypedia Team proudly and unequivocally maintains this commitment. In addition, The Beautypedia Team reviews all products using the same rating standards and criteria, whether it is a Paula's Choice product or another brand.

Paula's Choice Skincare was established in 1995 when best-selling beauty author and consumer advocate Paula Begoun (known as The Cosmetics Cop) decided to develop her own products. Like most of us, she was fed up with products that overpromised results, cost a lot of money, and failed to deliver—or made matters worse!

As a natural evolution of Paula's personal mission to help consumers find the best products for their skin, the line has grown into an extensive range of skincare and makeup products that are formulated to meet the needs of almost every skin type and skin concern imaginable. From acne to wrinkles, oily skin, rosacea, large pores, eczema, redness, sagging, dry skin, and on and on, Paula's Choice offers a solution.

Paula's Choice Skincare stands apart from other cosmetics brands. The formulas contain only ingredients that have substantiated, published research showing they are beneficial and effective—so you get visible results. Stable packaging is another feature of the brand, using innovative, opaque, and air-tight or air-restrictive components that keep antioxidants and other light- and air-sensitive ingredients from breaking down (unlike jar packaging, which compromises what might otherwise be an effective formula). The line is also 100% fragrance-free, which is best for all skin types, especially for those with sensitive skin or rosacea.

From cleansers to broad-spectrum sunscreens to anti-aging serums to specialized treatments, Paula's Choice Skincare has you covered from head to toe with innovative, state-of-the-art products. The brand also offers professional-quality makeup products including concealer, foundation, eyeshadow, lipstick, and more. (Paula started out as a makeup artist so she definitely knows her way around a face!)

Paula's Choice Skincare does not test on animals and also takes an environmentally friendly approach by featuring minimalist, recyclable packaging. Another plus—the Customer Service team is among the best in the industry, offering a "100% satisfaction or your money back" guarantee.

Why are all Paula's Choice Skincare products rated highly? The Paula's Choice Skincare Team would not launch a product unless it was worthy of a high rating from The Beautypedia Team. Paula and The Beautypedia Team were researching and reviewing products long before Paula's Choice Skincare ever existed and consumers were constantly requesting a skincare brand that met all of Beautypedia's criteria. As a result, The Paula's Choice Skincare Team was created and uses the same research and criteria to formulate Paula's Choice products as The Beautypedia Team uses to review products.

About the Experts

The new Beautypedia Team proudly and unequivocally maintains the commitment to help you find the best products possible for your skin. We do this by relentlessly pursuing and relying on published scientific research so you will have unbiased information on what works and what doesn't-and the sneaky ways you could be making your skin worse, not better!

The Beautypedia Team reviews all products using the same research, criteria, and objectivity, whether the product being reviewed is from Paula's Choice or another brand.

Holy Grail. Period.

I have rosacea and oily skin and have been on the hunt for a good sunscreen that doesn't irritate my skin, doesn't exaggerate my oiliness/shininess, doesn't feel icky on my face and doesn't interfere with my makeup. I finally found it! This sunscreen actually calms the redness on my face, somehow. If I'm having a bad reaction to something that causes a flareup, I slap this on and it's like "ahhhh!" So good. I can't go a day without it!

Best non greasy sun block ever

I cannot use regular chemical sunscreens as they irritate my skin and cause redness, so I switched to sunblocks with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. These types were better in that they did not turn my checks red but they were very greasy causing blemishes i.e. Lancôme and Aubrey. However, Paula's HYDRALIGHT SPF 30 is perfect. It is not greasy and goes on feeling like a regular cream. Does not turn my face white and no breakouts! I cannot say enough good about this product. Love, love, love it!

Oily at first but set in just right in minutes

Like most, I have a graveyard of unused face care products. I wanted a product I would be married to. When I applied this moisturizer for the first time, within a few seconds I was concerned b/c it was very greasy looking...I even said to my self..."ohhhh noooooo please don't be greasy - please don't let me down" (lol). After barely a minute my skin absorbed the product and it was true to it's word, I had a nice matte finish. In love!!!

I will not be without this.

I have combination, oily T zone, 63-year-old, fair, freckled skin, and have never found a satisfactory sunscreen. Many brands tried resulted in burning, increased oil in a T zone which needed protection, skin felt smothered. This product eliminates the need for a primer, and what a primer! I applied this after cleansing and toning, applied PC bronzer, which was still on and looking beautiful at day's end, and T zone oil was still under control. I love multitasking products. Bravo, Paula!

Good, but not great

After using the non-SPF version of this moisturizer and LOVING it, I thought I'd try this for the daytime. Unfortunately for me, it's just not working out. The texture is ok, but my skin feels pretty dry after 10 minutes or so. I'm hesitant to use more on my face because I do find that it makes my skin look pale and white. I've bought it a few times, just to be sure it wasn't a bad batch, but each time it's the same issues. I'll be looking for something else now, so we'll see.

A Winner!

Just bought this because I've been looking for a sheer, light, matte mineral sunscreen for my oil skin. Not greasy or sticky and works well under make-up.
