Review Overview

Extra Care Non-Greasy Sunscreen SPF 50, for Normal to Oily/Combination Skin is a water-resistant sunscreen whose lightweight lotion texture blends smoothly over skin and provides a soft matte finish. It has a more elegant feel than many other high-SPF products, and provides sufficient UVA protection thanks to stabilized avobenzone.

The formula contains antioxidants to boost skin's environmental defenses and is great for those who are active outdoors, sweating and/or swimming (though you'll still need to reapply after toweling off). This sunscreen is ideal for normal to oily/combination or breakout-prone skin.

As with similar high-SPF sunscreens, some may find that the high percentage of actives needed to reach SPF 50 might be sensitizing, especially when applied around the eyes. If this applies to you, switch to a mineral sunscreen (active ingredients titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide).

Pros:
  • Provides broad-spectrum sun protection in a lightweight lotion texture.
  • Sets to a soft matte finish ideal for oily/combination and blemish-prone skin.
  • Antioxidants boost skin's environmental defenses.
  • Very water-resistant; great for extended outdoor activities.
Cons:
  • Some may find the high percentage of actives sensitizing for use around the eyes.
Claims

This antioxidant-rich sunscreen provides broad-spectrum sun protection without leaving a greasy or waxy film on skin. Formulated for the face and body, it may be worn under makeup and is ideal for outdoor activities because it is very water-resistant. Extra Care Non-Greasy Sunscreen SPF 50 slips on smoothly and leaves skin with a softly radiant matte finish.

Disclosure: Paula Begoun is creator of Beautypedia and founder of Paula's Choice Skincare products. Reviewing thousands of skincare and makeup products over the past 30 years, both on this site and in her best-selling books, Paula's mission has always been to help consumers find the best products possible for their skin. The Beautypedia Team proudly and unequivocally maintains this commitment. In addition, The Beautypedia Team reviews all products using the same rating standards and criteria, whether it is a Paula's Choice product or another brand.

Paula's Choice Skincare was established in 1995 when best-selling beauty author and consumer advocate Paula Begoun (known as The Cosmetics Cop) decided to develop her own products. Like most of us, she was fed up with products that overpromised results, cost a lot of money, and failed to deliver—or made matters worse!

As a natural evolution of Paula's personal mission to help consumers find the best products for their skin, the line has grown into an extensive range of skincare and makeup products that are formulated to meet the needs of almost every skin type and skin concern imaginable. From acne to wrinkles, oily skin, rosacea, large pores, eczema, redness, sagging, dry skin, and on and on, Paula's Choice offers a solution.

Paula's Choice Skincare stands apart from other cosmetics brands. The formulas contain only ingredients that have substantiated, published research showing they are beneficial and effective—so you get visible results. Stable packaging is another feature of the brand, using innovative, opaque, and air-tight or air-restrictive components that keep antioxidants and other light- and air-sensitive ingredients from breaking down (unlike jar packaging, which compromises what might otherwise be an effective formula). The line is also 100% fragrance-free, which is best for all skin types, especially for those with sensitive skin or rosacea.

From cleansers to broad-spectrum sunscreens to anti-aging serums to specialized treatments, Paula's Choice Skincare has you covered from head to toe with innovative, state-of-the-art products. The brand also offers professional-quality makeup products including concealer, foundation, eyeshadow, lipstick, and more. (Paula started out as a makeup artist so she definitely knows her way around a face!)

Paula's Choice Skincare does not test on animals and also takes an environmentally friendly approach by featuring minimalist, recyclable packaging. Another plus—the Customer Service team is among the best in the industry, offering a "100% satisfaction or your money back" guarantee.

Why are all Paula's Choice Skincare products rated highly? The Paula's Choice Skincare Team would not launch a product unless it was worthy of a high rating from The Beautypedia Team. Paula and The Beautypedia Team were researching and reviewing products long before Paula's Choice Skincare ever existed and consumers were constantly requesting a skincare brand that met all of Beautypedia's criteria. As a result, The Paula's Choice Skincare Team was created and uses the same research and criteria to formulate Paula's Choice products as The Beautypedia Team uses to review products.

About the Experts

The new Beautypedia Team proudly and unequivocally maintains the commitment to help you find the best products possible for your skin. We do this by relentlessly pursuing and relying on published scientific research so you will have unbiased information on what works and what doesn't-and the sneaky ways you could be making your skin worse, not better!

The Beautypedia Team reviews all products using the same research, criteria, and objectivity, whether the product being reviewed is from Paula's Choice or another brand.

Great product! Always but several tubes to make sure I don't run out

Great product . it is my go to sunscreen and I use it daily. I put foundation and powder on top and I hope that is ok. I know it says to reply after a few hours but if I am mostly in doors with going out daily for a walk do I need to redo my face again?

Matte and healing

Since I have a sensitive skin, I have to stick to mineral-based sunscreens for my face, but for the rest of my body this is a great alternative. It feels like a whipped body milk which absorbs very quickly and does not leave you looking ghastly or greasy. I also found that it has healing properties: in the winter I had a break out on my forearms which left me with small marks/spots. I swear after using this sunscreen for two weeks, these marks are visibly reduced!

Can't Use On Face

I am only able to use this product on the back of my neck and decollatage. When used on my face it causes bumps and scaly patches. None the less, on the drier skin in the areas I mentioned before, it works very well and penetrates quickly . I would recommend it as an appropieate for use on the body but not on the face.

DON'T let it expire!

I made the mistake of using this product before noticing that it was two months past its expiry date. My little girl and I were badly scorched in horrible streaks, despite multiple even and liberal applications. I know that I have used other sunscreen brands past their expiry without an issue. I love the non-greasy finish and PC was very gracious about refunding our money, but it was an experience I never want to repeat. Be careful.

The best daily sunscreen I've found!

I am so happy this is back in stock! I have very fair skin and have a long drive to work in the Florida Sun and this is the best sunscreen for daily use. It is moisturizing without being greasy and gives mineral protection without smelling like a day at the beach. The only comparable product out there is by Clinique but this one is better!

I'm not crazy about this sunscreen

I love PC products, but I find that this sunscreen does leave me looking pretty shiny / greasy. Also, since switching to this sunscreen from mineral ones (i.e. zinc oxide, which admittedly looks even worse), I've found my skin becoming more sun-damaged. Granted, I spend a lot of time outside, but unfortunately my search for a sunscreen that protects my fair, sensitive yet somewhat oily skin, that doesn't leave me looking greasy (this one) or like I'm wearing clown makeup (zinc oxide) continues.

Love!

I love how this product is so light! It actually has a whipped texture and smooths over skin very well. Also does not leave my face feeling greasy like most waterproof/resistant lotions. A must if you spend a lot of time near water and want to take great care of your skin.
