Review Overview

Resist Cellular Defense Daily Moisturizer with SPF 25 & Antioxidants protects skin from wrinkles and brown spots with a gentle, mineral-based sunscreen. Its elegant, lightweight cream texture moisturizes and treats skin to a range of proven antioxidants.

Best for normal to dry skin, this daytime moisturizer won't feel greasy or impart a white cast on fair to medium skin tones. It leaves skin smooth and helps brighten a dull complexion with a radiant finish, partly attributable to the titanium dioxide.

Daily use ensures skin continues to repair sun damage so it is able to generate healthy collagen to improve wrinkles and other signs of aging. This fragrance-free daytime moisturizer with sunscreen is also a brilliant option for those with sensitive skin, including rosacea.

Note:

This product was recently downgraded from our top rating to three stars, which is considered good. The reason for the change is due to the prevailing recommendation that your daytime sun protection product be rated SPF 30 or greater. This revised recommendation is due to the fact that most people are not applying sunscreen liberally enough to earn the stated level of protection on the label; therefore, a higher SPF rating will be more advantageous. See the More Info section for additional details.

Pros:
  • Protects skin from wrinkles and brown spots with a gentle, mineral-based sunscreen.
  • Moisturizes and treats skin to a range of proven antioxidants.
  • Helps brighten a dull complexion with a radiant finish.
  • Fragrance-free formula that those with sensitive skin (including rosacea) can use.
Cons:
  • None.

Sunscreens Rated SPF 25: A growing body of current research has demonstrated that it's better to use a sunscreen rated SPF 30 or greater to ensure adequate defense against the sun's aging UV rays. SPF 25 is an option, but only if you're willing to apply liberally and your skin will be seeing five hours of daylight or less. While this sunscreen will provide the SPF number on the label and has UVA-protecting ingredients. Applying an SPF 30-rated sunscreen under a foundation, tinted moisturizer, or BB cream that offers broad-spectrum SPF 30+ will take far better care of your skin. Plus, this layering approach ensures your skin gets sufficient sun protection even if you're not applying liberally. For a list of UVA sunscreen actives, see the Cosmetic Ingredients Dictionary entry on PaulasChoice.com.

Disclosure: Paula Begoun is creator of Beautypedia and founder of Paula's Choice Skincare products. Reviewing thousands of skincare and makeup products over the past 30 years, both on this site and in her best-selling books, Paula's mission has always been to help consumers find the best products possible for their skin. The Beautypedia Team proudly and unequivocally maintains this commitment. In addition, The Beautypedia Team reviews all products using the same rating standards and criteria, whether it is a Paula's Choice product or another brand.

Paula's Choice Skincare was established in 1995 when best-selling beauty author and consumer advocate Paula Begoun (known as The Cosmetics Cop) decided to develop her own products. Like most of us, she was fed up with products that overpromised results, cost a lot of money, and failed to deliver—or made matters worse!

As a natural evolution of Paula's personal mission to help consumers find the best products for their skin, the line has grown into an extensive range of skincare and makeup products that are formulated to meet the needs of almost every skin type and skin concern imaginable. From acne to wrinkles, oily skin, rosacea, large pores, eczema, redness, sagging, dry skin, and on and on, Paula's Choice offers a solution.

Paula's Choice Skincare stands apart from other cosmetics brands. The formulas contain only ingredients that have substantiated, published research showing they are beneficial and effective—so you get visible results. Stable packaging is another feature of the brand, using innovative, opaque, and air-tight or air-restrictive components that keep antioxidants and other light- and air-sensitive ingredients from breaking down (unlike jar packaging, which compromises what might otherwise be an effective formula). The line is also 100% fragrance-free, which is best for all skin types, especially for those with sensitive skin or rosacea.

From cleansers to broad-spectrum sunscreens to anti-aging serums to specialized treatments, Paula's Choice Skincare has you covered from head to toe with innovative, state-of-the-art products. The brand also offers professional-quality makeup products including concealer, foundation, eyeshadow, lipstick, and more. (Paula started out as a makeup artist so she definitely knows her way around a face!)

Paula's Choice Skincare does not test on animals and also takes an environmentally friendly approach by featuring minimalist, recyclable packaging. Another plus—the Customer Service team is among the best in the industry, offering a "100% satisfaction or your money back" guarantee.

Why are all Paula's Choice Skincare products rated highly? The Paula's Choice Skincare Team would not launch a product unless it was worthy of a high rating from The Beautypedia Team. Paula and The Beautypedia Team were researching and reviewing products long before Paula's Choice Skincare ever existed and consumers were constantly requesting a skincare brand that met all of Beautypedia's criteria. As a result, The Paula's Choice Skincare Team was created and uses the same research and criteria to formulate Paula's Choice products as The Beautypedia Team uses to review products.

About the Experts

The new Beautypedia Team proudly and unequivocally maintains the commitment to help you find the best products possible for your skin. We do this by relentlessly pursuing and relying on published scientific research so you will have unbiased information on what works and what doesn't-and the sneaky ways you could be making your skin worse, not better!

The Beautypedia Team reviews all products using the same research, criteria, and objectivity, whether the product being reviewed is from Paula's Choice or another brand.

Beautypedia Team Response

Hey there!  Thanks for your feedback!  We're actually in the process of downgrading all of the sunscreens (and moisturizers with sunscreen) that aren't SPF 30 down from our "Best" rating as we speak.  We've been working backwards down the list and have about a dozen remaining (out of about fifty total - there are a few by Kiss My Face, Aubrey, and Physicians Formula that are currently under BEST and should be GOOD, too) and should have the rest downgraded over the course of the next day or two :)  Thank you for your patience!

Annoying

I wish they would make this with Zinc Oxide instead to get the full spectrum of sunscreen!

For Dry Skin ONLY

I have been using this product for about 4 months and offer this warning - It does leave a whitish hue until the skin absorbs it and it is heavy therefore I would not use if skin is not dry/very dry and don't over-apply. It took me awhile to get used to it but now I LOVE it. My skin absorbs it well.I don't use it on my nose, the only area I have too much oil; I use another oil free sunscreen instead. Not sure if I will be able to use in Summer but definitely a Fall, Winter and Spring item.

Love the feel but very shiny look

Feels great on my dry skin but it left my tremendously shiny. Had to use powder and bronzer over it to counter and on a regular soccer mom kind of day I just wanna run out after SPF alone.

Shiny bright!

I purchased the Resist Anti-Aging system and I have been very pleased with the products except for this one. It adds a distinct whitish cast to any area it is applied to, and once massaged in, a shiny oily appearance. I spent the workday blotting and wiping, but that glistening appearance and heavy slickness didn't budge until I got home and washed. Disappointing! I may save this for autumn when the weather is less hot and humid, but for right now, it's a no go.

Excellent, would like bigger tube

I prefer mineral sunscreen for my rosacea. This product is moisturizing & goes on smoothly. I'm fairly pale & tho i use only the recommended amount, it does leave a white cast; so sometimes i mix in a little foundation with SPF to tint it - that only takes a few extra seconds. I use it daily & go through a tube faster than other RESIST products, so i wish it came in a bigger tube. I tried other sunscreens & come back to this one. Remember, when out in the sun, reapply sunscreen every 2 hours.

LOVING!!!

This is the absolute best sunscreen my dry, aging skin has ever had!!! PLEASE don't ever change the formulation! Yes, it is a bit expensive, but considering it came with the RESIST line that I bought, it's really not all that expensive when broken down item by item. Incidentally, my skin, thus far, is looking FAB! These products are a dream come true for me as I've tried everything from LaMer to Olay. Thank you Paula and team!!!

brown spot

I used this product for the first time on my face 7 weeks ago. I was out in the sun for about 2 hours. Now I have a dark brown spot on my forehead. I thought it would go away in time but its still there. I am very disappointed. The spot will not go away. I feel like I'm scarred for life. Ugh!!

Shiny sticky mess

Luckily I got this as a sample when buying other products. I have normal skin, with a little shine in my t-zone during warmer months. This moisturizer left my skin feeling like the surface of a sticky roller, literally my skin was sticky to the touch. I used it after one of her salicylic acid treatment liquids, but I always do that before moisturizing. My skin was shiny, like brand new china, so I had to wash my face and start over; there was no way I could go out of the house looking like that.

Thank you for your review, and it is unfortunate this wasn't a fit for you! The truth is no skin-care product, no matter how well formulated, will work for everyone and this formula was likely too moisturizing for your needs as a dry to very dry skin product. However, we can ensure that you don't feel stuck with a product that didn't work out for you! Please contact our Customer Care Department and they will be happy to help with a credit or exchange.

Surprised Me

I received a sample of this moisturizer and at first application I thought it was a bit heavy for my combination skin. But 12 hours later, this stuff has made my skin feel amazing. Not greasy at all. My skin is usually an oil slick by 3pm. I don't know what's in this product but it totally surprised me. I've gone an entire day without blotting. Amazing stuff.

Thick, but awesome.

I was using Eminence Vanilla Sun Cream (SPF 32) and I was accustomed to a thicker cream. This one feels a bit heavier, so I would not suggest it for oily skin types. However, for dry skin, and even combination skin, it is a great product. It is thick, which at first surprised me, but if I put it on with my skin slightly damp from one of Paula's Choice Toners, it goes on very easily. I will buy this again.
