Review Overview

Pixi is not inhibited about its claims when it comes to this primer, describing it as a "miracle in a tube!" While it is an understatement to say that they're overstating things quite a bit, this is still an OK option for those with dry to normal skin.

This primer looks slightly whitish pink in the tube, but sheers out to a translucent finish and has a slight blurring effect on pores and imperfections. It's moisturizing and dries smoothly enough to serve as a good base for liquid and powder foundations.

If you have oily skin, this primer isn't recommended. From the time it sets until hours later, it has a "moist" feel that, coupled with oil buildup throughout the day, can result in foundation not holding up well and "sliding" off your face.

Pixi also claims that the salicylic acid in Flawless and Poreless will clear the pores, but it's present in such a small amount that it cannot make any difference. And, it has to be said—there are many primers out there that are just as good or better and that cost a lot less! You can find them on our list of: Best Foundation Primers.

One more comment: This primer contains a preservative (methylisothiazolinone) that is known to be sensitizing when used in leave-on products (Sources: Contact Dermatitis, December 2012, pages 334–341, and November 2011, pages 276–285). It's present in an amount that's likely too low to cause an issue, but it's still not a welcome addition.

  • Has a slight blurring effect on pores.
  • Moisturizing for dry skin.
  • Dries to a smooth finish.
  • Too "slick" for oily skin.
  • Not enough salicylic acid to clear pores as claimed.
  • Expensive for what you get.
  • Contains a preservative that's known to be sensitizing.

Brand Overview

Pixi At-A-Glance

Strengths: Tester units at the Target stores; complete ingredient lists on pixibeauty.com; excellent gel liner; great sheer cheek gel.

Weaknesses: Really overpriced; the Illuminating Tint & Conceal SPF 20 is poorly formulated, with irritants and an unreliable SPF; no decent concealer option; all eyeshadows are average at best; no customer care phone number available in the United States.

Swedish-born makeup artist Petra Strand is the creator of the Pixi line of makeup products. She started it in London, opening her first shop alongside the salon of her aesthetician sister, Sofia. The Pixi line is positioned as being packed with skin-beneficial ingredients that will help women get the "Makeup to Wakeup" essentials that they need to stock their cosmetics bags. That sounds cute and potentially helpful, but in fact the main ingredients in Pixi's makeup don't distinguish it as being more skin care–oriented than any other makeup product on the shelf.

Even if Pixi's products did have a two-in-one benefit it comes at a high cost. Although the line is sold at Target, it's priced as high as, and in some instances higher than, any line sold at a department store. However, these products are not makeup with a pronounced skin-care benefit, so they are not worth the extra money.

Of the new makeup artist lines now available at Target (JK Jemma Kid and NP Set along with Pixi), this one is actually the least impressive, and we predict it will be the first to be pulled from shelves. We recommend you shop this line with extra caution to avoid a pricey purchase that you're likely to regret or that you have to jump through hoops to return.

The good news is that, like fellow Target newcomers JK Jemma Kid and NP Set, the display for Pixi includes testers for every product. What a wonderful surprise! And if you happen to choose an item you're not happy with (hint: perhaps because there are better options for less from other lines) Target has a good return policy on cosmetics (just be sure to save your receipt—my strong opinion is that you'll need it).

Note: We were unable to locate a customer service phone number for Pixi and our e-mails to the company have gone unanswered. This is not a line to shop if you're expecting customer support beyond what Target offers.

Couldn't agree more

I purchased this for it's claim to blur out pores and yet all it has managed to do is make me an oil slick. Literally, I kept thinking my foundations were acting crazy when I suddenly started becoming WAY oilier than normal. One morning, I happened to really notice my skin after this had been applied (before foundation) and I realized I was ALREADY a greasy mess! I immediately washed it off and used something else. This is a big no no.

Utterly useless

Doesn't blur pores, balance skin tone or help makeup last any longer the three things I look to a primer to do. I got this as a sample and I will regift it to someone else because it's just taking up space in my makeup area.
