Review Overview

Redness Reducing Moisturizer with SPF 30 earns its SPF 30 rating from a combination of three synthetic sunscreen actives along with zinc oxide. The synthetic sunscreens have a higher incidence of causing a sensitizing reaction, so their inclusion in a product for someone with already reddened (presumably sensitive) skin is not wise. A moisturizer with sunscreen that contains only titanium dioxide or zinc oxide as its active ingredients is preferred for anyone dealing with persistent redness or sensitivity issues (Sources: Cosmetic Dermatology, March 2004, pages 171–172; and Cosmetics & Toiletries, October 2003, pages 73–78). Although this fragrance-free moisturizer is not an ideal choice for those dealing with facial redness, it is still a decent option for normal to dry skin. The formula feels lighter than many SPF 30 products, but unfortunately it doesn’t contain a significant amount of antioxidants or other state-of-the-art ingredients. The sunscreen combination is great, but it doesn’t warrant a higher rating because the base formula isn’t state-of-the-art. In addition, the redness-reducing claims are misleading, because the formula also contains preservatives that don’t have the best track record for someone with sensitive skin.

Helps to visibly reduce redness while protecting your skin with broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen. Its unique moisturizing complex begins to soothe dry irritated skin on contact and works to improve overall skin tone and texture.

Purpose At-A-Glance

Strengths: Inexpensive; one good cleanser.

Weaknesses: Bar soap; sunscreen that contains preservatives not recommended for use in leave-on products; claims that are not supported by intelligent formulas.

Johnson & Johnson–owned Purpose is a very small line of products that make a big deal out of their gentleness and suitability for sensitive skin. We have a lot of respect for many J&J products, particularly in their Neutrogena and Aveeno lines; however, Purpose is best summed up by a purposeful "don't bother." There is only one great product in this line, and it can also be found (for less money) in the Clean & Clear line (and that line also offers a fragrance-free version of the cleanser). The remaining products are absolutely not "gentle enough for all skin types, even sensitive skin." That's because none of them contain ingredients that are what sensitive skin needs to look and feel better. The bar soap is drying and the fragrance irritating, while the daytime moisturizers contain potentially sensitizing ingredients, including active sunscreen agents that no research anywhere has proven capable of reducing facial redness.
