Review Overview

The big to-do with this lip product is that it’s supposed to be a lip paint and top coat in one, thus negating the need to use the numerous two-step long-wearing lip products on the market. That’s an admirable goal, but Revlon failed miserably.

This liquid lipstick applies smoothly and feels like a lightweight gloss, but within minutes after it dries, your lips literally feel like the moisture is being sucked right out of them. We tried applying more product, thinking that because the top coat was built in it would offer some relief from the parched feeling. That didn’t happen. Instead, our lips continued to feel dry. About an hour later, the color began flaking and looking all-around unattractive.

Revlon maintains this wears for 12 hours, but I suspect most women won’t tolerate the way it feels for longer than 12 minutes, so their long-wearing claim won’t be put to the test. What a shame, because the concept is exciting and the shade range is beautiful.

Revlon At-A-Glance

Strengths: Superior foundations with sunscreen and each of them provide sufficient UVA protection (though one has a disappointing SPF 6); several outstanding concealers and powders; one of the best cream blushes around; great cream eyeshadow and liquid eyeliner; a beautiful selection of elegant lipsticks, lip gloss, and lipliner; some worthwhile specialty products.

Weaknesses: Average eye and brow pencils; inaccurate claims surrounding their Botafirm complex; mostly average to disappointing mascaras.

It may surprise some of you to know that Revlon has been around since 1932, when the company launched a unique nail polish that used pigments instead of dyes. Lipsticks followed years later, and then a full line of cosmetics, which is how we know Revlon today. Although the company has had its continual share of ups and downs over the years (largely due to out-of-control debt coupled with aggressive spending), the line has recently made numerous improvements, especially in the realms of foundations, powders, eyeshadows, and mascaras. It is quite a feat that Revlon products earned more Paula's Pick ratings per category than any other drugstore line reviewed. If their goal was to close the competitive gap between themselves and L'Oreal, for the most part they have succeeded. Revlon definitely has the edge for foundations with reliable sunscreens. But despite Revlon's attempt to improve their mascara range, L'Oreal remains the clear winner (as well as L'Oreal-owned Maybelline New York).

Revlon's vast selection of makeup is divided into three main brands: Age Defying for the forty-something and older woman concerned about wrinkles, ColorStay for the teen to mid-thirties woman concerned about keeping oily skin in check and making sure her makeup stays put, and PhotoReady for women of all ages. These brands present some outstanding options and include products for all skin types (although the range of skin tones is not as well-represented here as it is by L'Oreal).

An intriguing fact is that the longevity claims for ColorStay are quite accurate: this collection of products really does offer extraordinary staying power. Conversely, Revlon jumped on the works-like-Botox bandwagon with their Age Defying range, going so far as to name their antiwrinkle complex Botafirm. Is there any confusion about what that term is supposed to relate to? Despite the claims, Botafirm won't reduce expression lines or control the muscles that cause them, though the products themselves do have many impressive qualities.

Note:Revlon is categorized as one that tests on animals because their products are sold in China. Although Revlon may not conduct animal testing for their products sold elsewhere, the Chinese government requires imported cosmetics be tested on animals, so foreign companies retailing there must comply. This requirement is why some brand’s state that they don’t test on animals “unless required by law”. Animal rights organizations consider cosmetic companies retailed in China to be brands that test on animals, and so does the Beautypedia Team.

Suffice it to say, Revlon has more commendable products than ever before, and although they rely heavily on celebrity spokespersons, their best products ably speak for themselves.

Perhaps the Amount Layed on Creates an Issue?!

I, too, am surprised by this product's poor review, as I like this product very much. I have several tubes of the 035, Iconic Iris, and love the shade, as well as the durability. It's true that you can experience a "plasticky" sensation on your lips, depending on how much you apply, but I don't notice it at all when I apply a thin veneer of it, and appreciate its tenacity.

My experience was exactly the same as Beautypedia reviewer's!

I experienced the same thing w/ this product as the Beautypedia reviewer except that I felt the flakes coming off my lips SECONDS after applying! I was so astonished I burst out laughing! I bought it in the Royal Raisin color at Ulta, & absolutely adored the color, but the huge flakes it turned into almost instantly, and then followed by the total drying of my lips was a complete bummer! I see that others have had better luck, so maybe Revlon has occasional batch quality issues?

revlon colorstay lip stick.. forever sienna

wow also. Flaking??? I never had this at all. It's easy lasts at least 12 hours and I put the colour then the gloss and voila it feels ok - can eat a big sandwich right after. People are always asking what it is. It's animal tested you say? I worried at first but it's been a year no ill effect. what makes it last so long is it a stain? I take it off at night with vaseline , my lips are still rosy after a long day. If anything though it doesn't seem to last as long as the 1st ones did.

Better with a balm

I tried this out because I need a long lasting color that stays on through a few hours of dance performance. It went on lightly and is durable, but as the review said, very dry, although I didn't experience the flaking. I found that it looks and feels much better if I use a gloss or balm over it. Of course, that affects the durability, but it still stays put well enough to be worthwhile. I also find the quality varies with the shade.

Not that bad! I use it every day.

Wow, I really like this product and was surprised at the poor review! I use it everyday and haven't experienced the dryness and flaking that the Beautypedia reviewer mentions. Maybe that's because I precede the lipstick application with a layer of Paula's Choice "Lip & Body Treatment Balm," a colorless moisturizer. The Revlon lipstick goes on smoothly like a lip gloss and is slightly sheer. It's a little gummy while it dries, but after about 5-10 minutes I can't feel it any more. It definitely has staying power and maintains its satiny shine!
