ScandalEyes Eye Shadow Paints may not be the easiest eyeshadows to work with, but one thing is for sure—they stay put and are virtually budge-proof! These fragrance-free, metallic-finish shadows have an initially creamy texture, which you can apply with the included sponge tip wand or your fingertips, depending on which method you find easier.

Applying with fingertips sheers out the color as you blend, leaving a softer, shimmering wash of color. If you want to maintain the more intense metallic hue, use the sponge tip applicator and build color by dabbing it on.

In either regard, the key is to be swift with blending! The formula quickly dries down to a stay put, smudge-proof finish—so if you need to go back in and touch things up, you have to do it fast. Despite the fact that ScandalEyes Eye Shadow Paint applies smoothly, it takes some practice to get the softly blended edges you want in your eyeshadow look.

If you can master the application, the payoff in terms of longevity is great! ScandalEyes Eye Shadow Paint goes the distance offering several hours (beyond a normal workday) of wear without creasing or fading on lids (even if you have oily skin). It also wears well under powder eyeshadows if you prefer to mix and match a bit or want to use it as a metallic eyeshadow base.

Don't, however, count on it to be waterproof as claimed. It most definitely breaks down with a splash of water, but on the plus side, that makes it easy to remove with a cleanser and/or makeup remover at night's end.

There is a variety of shades to choose from, including darker and brighter hues. In general, the shades that more closely resemble your skin tone are easiest to work with given they're a bit more forgiving if you don't get the blending just right. All have a metallic, shimmering finish and some contain finely milled glitter (and, good news: The glitter doesn't flake).

In the end, ScandalEyes Eye Shadow Paint gets a good rating for its budge-proof durability that provides hours of worry-proof wear. But, you have to go into knowing this won't be the easiest eyeshadow to work with and you can count on a bit of trial and error to get the hang of the application quirks.

Pros:

  • Offers hours of worry-free wear (no creasing, smudging or fading).
  • Despite tenacious finish, it's easy to remove when you're ready.
  • Fragrance-free formula wears well as a base for powder shadow.
  • Can go on sheer or as a more intensely saturated metallic hue, depending on how you want to apply it.

Cons:

  • Although the creamy consistency goes on smoothly, it takes effort to get softly blended edge.
  • Quick dry formula doesn't offer much time to blend.
  • Is not waterproof as claimed.

Brand Overview

Rimmel At-A-Glance

Strengths: Inexpensively priced; a great pressed bronzing powder; several impressive mascaras; a collection of praiseworthy of lip color products including gloss and lipstick; a couple of good foundations.

Weaknesses: Not the most user-friendly packaging; lackluster skincare-esque products; some gimmicky makeup items that turn out to be duds.

Rimmel is a London-based company, under the ownership of Coty Inc. since 1996 (Coty also owns other cosmetic lines such as philosophy and Sally Hansen). A self-proclaimed “edgy” cosmetics line that’s all about experimentation and “setting trends, not following them”, Rimmel livens things up with a mix of trendy and classic shade options and new product launches at a rapid pace.

While not all of Rimmel’s products are an absolute hit, there are some individual standout items (see top-rated reviews) that can compete with the best of what’s out there—at rock bottom prices no less. A few of their lip color products deserve special mention for their elegant texture and fashion-forward colors.

Where Rimmel falls into hit-or-miss territory is with its excessive collection of mascaras (it seems as though they launch a new one every month) which makes it confusing to try to figure out which one is the best. Some are impressive and absolutely worth buying, while others are gimmicky duds. Lucky for you, we’ve put them rigorous testing so you can make an informed decision! Oh, what our lashes go through so you avoid frustration and wasting money!

Rimmel also dabbles in a smidgen of skincare-esque products that claim to go above and beyond the norm. For various reasons mentioned within the individual reviews, these products tend to fall short of being worthwhile purchases, even at their bargain-friendly price point. Overall, while Rimmel has some misses, they earn our praise for several good to excellent makeup items at nearly unbeatable prices. Sort by three-star and four-star rating under this brand to find the best of what Rimmel has to offer!

Note: Many Rimmel products featured on their Web site are not available in the United States; they are exclusive to United Kingdom drugstores. The products reviewed below are those that are consistently found at U.S. stores nationwide, specifically Target, Walgreens and Wal-Mart.
