Rimmel's ScandalEyes Xx-Treme mascara comes with claims that it can add dramatic length and volume to lashes thanks to its special brush. Unfortunately, it just can't live up to those claims, and because of its mediocre performance, only earns an average rating on Beautypedia.
Rimmel ScandalEyes Xx-Treme comes in a large pink tube, and includes a brush with rubber bristles and two sides. This brush is the main selling point of this mascara: One side is flat, which is supposed to be used to define and lengthen lashes, while the other is curved, which is designed to enhance volume. We found the brush design didn't make a major impact either way (the mascara had the same impact regardless of the side of the brush that was used), and in fact was prone to collecting excess mascara that had to be wiped off the end.
As for the mascara itself, it isn't bad, but it doesn't deliver on most of its claims. The formula made our lashes stick together, which, while it does make lashes stand out and look more distinctive, does not aid in volumizing. There was also some minor clumping on the initial application, and the clumping was more apparent with successive coats.
ScandalEyes Xx-Treme did perform well when it came to lengthening lashes, and it added some curl as well. It also didn't smudge throughout a standard work day, though there was some minor flaking by the end of its wear time.
It does include some beneficial ingredients, like antioxidants, plant oils and skin reparatives, but these are wasted in mascara, as your lashes are made up of dead cells. Such ingredients can't "nourish" lashes to any extent, but Rimmel doesn't make any such claims—we just wanted to clarify for those of you curious about their presence in this formula.
Overall, Rimmel ScandalEyes Xx-Treme mascara has some positive aspects, but not enough to earn our enthusiastic recommendation. For mascaras with far better performance, see our list of Best Mascaras.
