Sea Breeze

Sea Breeze At-A-Glance

Strengths: Inexpensive; available in most major drugstores.

Weaknesses: Irritation is the rule rather than the exception; average cleansers; terrible toners/astringents; boring moisturizers; no sunscreens.

There is very little positive news about this longstanding line that began with a single astringent. The original Sea Breeze product is still being sold, and still laden with a cadre of ingredients that only harm skin. In terms of any of these ingredients being disinfectants, some of them are. However, there are considerably better, gentler disinfectants available that don't deluge skin with needless irritants.

The expanded Sea Breeze lineup is nothing special, consisting of a couple of mediocre cleansers and a bland moisturizer. It is clear that their niche market is primarily those looking for astringents under the mistaken notion that alcohol, peppermint oil, camphor, and other irritants are needed to reduce acne and oily skin. Alcohol is a great de-greasing agent for skin, but the free radical damage and irritation it causes lead to oilier skin in the long run, possibly with superficial dryness. None of the Sea Breeze products are worth serious consideration, even though it is one of the more affordable (yet woefully incomplete) skin-care lines on the market.
