Review Overview

This nearly all-natural moisturizer has a thin, lotion-like texture that belies its richness. The amount of non-fragrant plant oils the formula contains make it best for normal to dry skin. And good news: The plant oils provide a great antioxidant kick and each contains some anti-inflammatory components to help smooth skin's surface and strengthen its barrier function—exactly what a good moisturizer for dry skin should do!

What would propel this moisturizer to our top rating would be the inclusion of some repairing ingredients like glycerin, cholesterol, or ceramides and perhaps a cell-communicating ingredient such as niacinamide. As is, though, and definitely for the money, this is a good option to consider, especially for use at night (the moist finish isn't ideal to apply makeup over), or this would also be great for use around the eyes if the skin in that area is dry.

Note: The ingredient lists "natural fragrance" but this moisturizer has no discernible scent, so we're not concerned of the fragrance being a problem for irritation or those with sensitive skin. Worth mentioning, though, is that according to ingredient regulations, ShiKai should be listing "natural fragrance" simply as "fragrance". Ditto for "Purified water", which should be "Water".

  • Lightweight but substantially emollient texture suits dry skin well.
  • Inexpensive.
  • Loaded with non-fragrant, antioxidant-rich plant oils.
  • No discernible scent despite containing fragrance.
  • Formula lacks an intriguing mix of repairing and cell-communicating ingredients.

An everyday natural moisturizer with Borage oil. Non-greasy. Leaves skin soft, smooth, supple.

Purified Water (Aqua), Borage (Borago Officinalis) Seed Oil, Avocado (Persea Gratissima) Oil, Jojoba (Simmondsia Chinensis) Seed Oil (Glycerin, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Shea Butter (Butyrospermum Parkii Fruit), Vitamin E Acetate (Tocopherol Acetate), Cetyl Alcohol, Batyl Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexyl Glycerin, Natural Fragrance.

Brand Overview

Strengths: Uses many natural ingredients that don't pose a risk to skin

Weaknesses: Use of some volatile fragrant ingredients that can lead to allergic or sensitized reactions; must research products before you buy to ensure you will help skin rather than hurt it.

The doctor-designed, California-based ShiKai product range is extensive and sold in many health food stores and natural markets. Just like many products vying for your attention and dollars, they're big theme is natural ingredients. To that end, you'll see the same claims many other brands use, including "all natural", "botanicals" and a penchant for natural fragrances that the company maintains are less likely to cause an allergic reaction, but research certainly doesn't bear that out. Many natural ingredients contain fragranc chemicals contain a litany of volatile components that can cause a wide range of allergic or sensitized reactions, ranging from discolorations upon exposure to sunlight to irritant contact dermatitis (Source: www.naturaldatabase.com). There are hundreds of excellent natural ingredients that don't pose these risks, and we are pleased that ShiKai uses many of these in their products. But as with all natural-oriented lines, this isn't a brand to shop without knowing exactly what you're buying and whether or not it will do your skin more harm than good. Great Moisturizer for a Good Price

I have purchased this moisturizer more than once, (a rarity for me). There is no scent, and it applies smoothly. I can wear it as a makeup base, but I have drier skin. Works well under sunscreen, too. A winner!

Not for me

This moisturizer was NOT for me. It is so thin that it's difficult to apply. It made my face sticky and did nothing to moisturize. It started itching about an hour after I applied it. Will NOT recommend.
