Micellar Cleansing Water is a gentle fluid cleanser with an ingredient list that reads more like a gentle liquid makeup remover than a standard water-soluble cleanser. And not surprisingly, it’s applied exactly the same way, with a cotton pad that you wipe over the face, no need to rinse. Big deal, right?

So what of the micellar name? Is it really as advanced as Simple says? In a word, no. Micellar involves micelles, which are a type of electrically charged particle. Micelle technology is one way of explaining how any surfactant (which this product and thousands of other cleansers contain) combines with water and interacts with oils (such as the sebum our skin produces) to clean any surface, including skin. Micelle technology is one of many methods to formulate a cleanser; it’s not an “advanced” method, but there’s nothing inherently wrong with it, either.

Micellar Cleansing Water is best for normal to dry or sensitive skin. The fragrance-free formula is gentle, but too mild for those with oily or breakout-prone skin. Since this is meant to be left on skin, it’s good that it contains a couple of anti-irritants plus the cell-communicating ingredient niacinamide.

Note that this cleanser/makeup remover is not adept at removing waterproof or long-wearing makeup. For those you’ll want an oil- or silicone-based makeup remover or a regular cleanser that cleans more thoroughly than this can.

Pros:

  • Fragrance-free, mild formula.
  • Unlikely to irritate skin or cause sensitivity.
  • Contains anti-irritants.
  • Inexpensive.

Cons:

  • Not adept at removing long-wearing makeup.
  • Won’t cleanse as thoroughly as a regular facial cleanser.
