Review Overview

Clean Slate 360 Creaseless 12-hour Smoothing Eye Primer means well but causes more problems than it solves. The biggest negative is that it sets to an ashy white cast that will leave your eyelids looking more like a dirty chalkboard than a “clean slate”. As for the 12-hour creaseless wear claim, expect closer to four or five hours of worry-free wear—if worn with a powder eyeshadow (a cream eyeshadow causes this primer to crease and smudge). The amount of film-forming agent and dry-finish ingredients can also feel uncomfortable around the eyes. There are definitely less drying and more effective eye primers available for a lower price, or you can eliminate the need for this type of product by prepping your eyelid area with a liquid concealer that has a matte finish.

  • Prevents eyeshadow creasing and fading for several hours (just not 12 hours as claimed).
  • Sets to an ashy white cast.
  • The finish can feel drying and the amount of film-forming agent is potentially irritating when used so close to the eye.
  • Expensive.

Brand Overview

Tarte Cosmetics At-A-Glance

Strengths: Excellent foundations; great cheek stain and powder blushes; superior pressed powder and eyelining pencils; good mascaras; unique, innovative, beautiful packaging; complete ingredient lists on the company's Web site.

Weaknesses: Can be pricey.

Tarte Cosmetics CEO and founder Maureen Kelly started Tarte in 1999, out of a desire to create a cosmetics line that “would prove that glamour can be good for you.” This comes in the form of products that highlight naturally-derived ingredients in their marketing campaigns, and occasionally taking swipes at the concept of synthetics in makeup.

This is ironic, as Tarte uses more than a few beneficial synthetically derived ingredients in their formulas—silicones, synthetic fragrances, preservatives and on and on. However, we’ll forgive them that as what’s ultimately important is whether their products meet your needs, and to that we can say the brand excels in many areas at what they do.

However, a few products are a bit on the pricey side and there are a few iffy shades and textures to consider among their foundations—noted in their respective reviews. A few caveats aside, most of Tarte's foundations, blush options, eye pencils and an ever-expanding range of innovative products demonstrate that color is what they do best.

Surprised by low rating from Beautypedia

I'm quite surprised to see such a low rating from Beautypedia for this product; I have to assume that like many eye primers, performance varies with skin type, and the reviewer just didn't have success with this one. I have found the Tarte 360 to be one of the few eyelid primers that works on my oily lids and doesn't result in patchy eyeshadow application (e.g., others rave about LORAC's primer, but it makes my shadows terribly patchy). I don't have any issues with longevity, either. Love it.

Only 1 for me.

Only primer I can count on that I won't crease. But, my lids are dry when I do use this which is annoying.I've had tried Lorac, too faced, and urban decay. I have problems With those brands they all get watery.I like that this has vitamin E. I just have to wipe this make sure it dried really well .after applying it and waiting 60 seconds. And Mac paint pots I can't use anymore since I'm oily.
