Tarte's Colored Clay CC Primer is an intriguing product for a couple of reasons. First, because it's a primer that comes in a creamy stick form rather than a liquid; second, because in the core of the stick are two different colors in addition to the flesh tone that makes up the majority of the product. The two core colors are light lavender and mint green, which is where the "CC," or color correcting, part of this primer's name originates. The lavender color is supposed to neutralize sallowness, while the green neutralizes redness.

Applying this primer is easy - simply swipe it across your face - and despite the three different colors featured in the stick, they all blend in to form a single, natural-looking flesh color. While it doesn't improve sallowness or redness any more than a lightweight foundation does, it does a good job of brightening skin and creating a more even tone for a polished look.

Application is very smooth, and although the stick is creamy, it dries to an attractive soft powder finish that feels silky on skin. As such, it works well as a primer, but it works just as well on its own as a lightweight replacement for foundation. It wears well all day without fading or emphasizing wrinkles. This comes in a limited range of shades, but includes natural-looking options for light to medium-dark skin. Note that this isn't ideal for acne-prone skin due to the ingredients (i.e. waxes) used to create its texture.

The only drawback is that the powdery finish emphasizes dry spots, even if you use a moisturizer first. If your skin doesn't have signs of dryness, though, this is certainly worth a try!

Pros:
  • Creamy, easy-to-apply formula.
  • Does a good job of brightening skin and evening its tone.
  • Attractive soft powder finish.
  • Doesn't fade or emphasize wrinkles throughout the day.
  • Works well as a primer or lightweight foundation.
  • Fragrance-free.
Cons:
  • Powdery finish emphasizes dry spots and flaky skin.
  • Doesn't contain the array of antioxidants and skin-repairing ingredients that the best BB and CC creams do.

Brand Overview

Tarte Cosmetics At-A-Glance

Strengths: Excellent foundations; great cheek stain and powder blushes; superior pressed powder and eyelining pencils; good mascaras; unique, innovative, beautiful packaging; complete ingredient lists on the company's Web site.

Weaknesses: Can be pricey.

Tarte Cosmetics CEO and founder Maureen Kelly started Tarte in 1999, out of a desire to create a cosmetics line that “would prove that glamour can be good for you.” This comes in the form of products that highlight naturally-derived ingredients in their marketing campaigns, and occasionally taking swipes at the concept of synthetics in makeup.

This is ironic, as Tarte uses more than a few beneficial synthetically derived ingredients in their formulas—silicones, synthetic fragrances, preservatives and on and on. However, we’ll forgive them that as what’s ultimately important is whether their products meet your needs, and to that we can say the brand excels in many areas at what they do.

However, a few products are a bit on the pricey side and there are a few iffy shades and textures to consider among their foundations—noted in their respective reviews. A few caveats aside, most of Tarte's foundations, blush options, eye pencils and an ever-expanding range of innovative products demonstrate that color is what they do best.
