Review Overview

The first thing we have to say about Tarte's Lights, Camera, Flashes Statement Mascara is that the claims are out of this world! Tarte claims that it increases lash volume by 752% instantly. First, we're not sure how they arrived at the 752% number (Why not a nice, even 750%?), and second, you probably wouldn't want your lash volume increased by that much because your lashes would be so heavy you wouldn't be able to keep your eyes open!

Putting the hype aside, Lights, Camera, Flashes is a decent mascara that doesn't do anything to set itself apart from the very crowded pack. While this adds a good amount of length, volume, and a small amount of curl, it also clumps from the first coat.

This mascara also feels heavy on the lashes, like they're being weighed down by the formula. Add to that the fact that this mascara smudges after a few hours, even though Tarte says it's longwearing and "won't budge," and you have a mascara that just isn't worth the price tag.

Brand Overview

Tarte Cosmetics At-A-Glance

Strengths: Excellent foundations; great cheek stain and powder blushes; superior pressed powder and eyelining pencils; good mascaras; unique, innovative, beautiful packaging; complete ingredient lists on the company's Web site.

Weaknesses: Can be pricey.

Tarte Cosmetics CEO and founder Maureen Kelly started Tarte in 1999, out of a desire to create a cosmetics line that “would prove that glamour can be good for you.” This comes in the form of products that highlight naturally-derived ingredients in their marketing campaigns, and occasionally taking swipes at the concept of synthetics in makeup.

This is ironic, as Tarte uses more than a few beneficial synthetically derived ingredients in their formulas—silicones, synthetic fragrances, preservatives and on and on. However, we’ll forgive them that as what’s ultimately important is whether their products meet your needs, and to that we can say the brand excels in many areas at what they do.

However, a few products are a bit on the pricey side and there are a few iffy shades and textures to consider among their foundations—noted in their respective reviews. A few caveats aside, most of Tarte's foundations, blush options, eye pencils and an ever-expanding range of innovative products demonstrate that color is what they do best.

best mascara ever...the best

Yes, it's pricier than drugstore mascara & yes, it's absolutely worth the $$$. If I could only wear 1 product it would be this mascara. Lashes look full w/ slight curl. Thick brush really easy to "wiggle" down to the base of my lashes & cover every lash @ inner & outer corner of my eyes. It doesn't smudge, but it does take a few minutes to dry. Note: It does not last all day-usually 6 or 7 hours. I love the coverage, volume & curl, but this is not a long spiky lash mascara.

Clumps and cakes and is generally entirely unusable. Disappointed. Super cute packaging though.

Lousy mascara!

I tried this after the first edition of Lights Camera Lashes and was highly disappointed. Tossed it out. The original in the purple case was far better. I totally agree with Paula's review. Don't waste your money or your time.
