Review Overview

This lip stain comes in a unique, chunky lip pencil form, and offers highly saturated color. We were impressed by this product’s staying power, ease of use, and uniform application. So why the Poor rating? Following in the footsteps of its sister LipSurgence products, this matte version contains the problematic ingredient peppermint oil, which encourages dryness and irritation. What a pity considering this would have been a fabulous option otherwise!

Brand Overview

Tarte Cosmetics At-A-Glance

Strengths: Excellent foundations; great cheek stain and powder blushes; superior pressed powder and eyelining pencils; good mascaras; unique, innovative, beautiful packaging; complete ingredient lists on the company's Web site.

Weaknesses: Can be pricey.

Tarte Cosmetics CEO and founder Maureen Kelly started Tarte in 1999, out of a desire to create a cosmetics line that “would prove that glamour can be good for you.” This comes in the form of products that highlight naturally-derived ingredients in their marketing campaigns, and occasionally taking swipes at the concept of synthetics in makeup.

This is ironic, as Tarte uses more than a few beneficial synthetically derived ingredients in their formulas—silicones, synthetic fragrances, preservatives and on and on. However, we’ll forgive them that as what’s ultimately important is whether their products meet your needs, and to that we can say the brand excels in many areas at what they do.

However, a few products are a bit on the pricey side and there are a few iffy shades and textures to consider among their foundations—noted in their respective reviews. A few caveats aside, most of Tarte's foundations, blush options, eye pencils and an ever-expanding range of innovative products demonstrate that color is what they do best.

Doesn't deserve poor

I am personally a huge fan of Tartes entire lip tint collection. While I understand that Paula's Choice generally does not recommend products with fragrance, I don't believe the peppermint in this product is "bad" enough to give it a poor rating. I really do not notice it much, and it doesn't bother my lips in any way. The products does really stain the lips well, and why it is a little drying, I do not consider it to be any more drying than most of the other lip products out there.

So-so product

While I love the color, and wanted a relatively matte effect, I wish this stain lasted better. It goes on nicely, but if I talk or otherwise move my lips until it sets, the color smears off. In addition, no matter what I do the color fades on the majority of my lips, and I'm left with a lip color stain around the edges of my lips. For the price, I expected better.
