Lipsurgence is another addition to Tarte's ever-expanding lineup of lip products, and this version has a lot of good things going for it!

This gloss comes in a standard tube with a wand applicator, and the doe-foot sponge is angled slightly to make application a bit easier. It glides on with ease and feels extraordinarily smooth going on.

The texture of this gloss is thick enough that it doesn't immediately slide off lips, but it's definitely not too sticky or goopy. It has a high-shine finish with medium color quality, and comes in a fairly large range of attractive shades, including some that leave a subtle shimmer.

This gloss is packed with emollients, so it feels moisturizing the entire time you're wearing it, and even when it's faded (about four hours in, depending on whether or not you eat something), your lips still feel moisturized.

The only drawback is the vanilla scent from the added flavor. While it does dissipate quickly, it's something to consider for those who would prefer their lip glosses to be fragrance-free.

Pros:
  • Smooth texture that isn't too sticky or goopy.
  • Pretty, high-shine finish and moderate color quality in an attractive range of shades.
  • Feels moisturizing while it's on, and leaves lips feeling softer once it's faded.
Cons:
  • Has a small amount of vanilla fragrance.

Brand Overview

Tarte Cosmetics At-A-Glance

Strengths: Excellent foundations; great cheek stain and powder blushes; superior pressed powder and eyelining pencils; good mascaras; unique, innovative, beautiful packaging; complete ingredient lists on the company's Web site.

Weaknesses: Can be pricey.

Tarte Cosmetics CEO and founder Maureen Kelly started Tarte in 1999, out of a desire to create a cosmetics line that “would prove that glamour can be good for you.” This comes in the form of products that highlight naturally-derived ingredients in their marketing campaigns, and occasionally taking swipes at the concept of synthetics in makeup.

This is ironic, as Tarte uses more than a few beneficial synthetically derived ingredients in their formulas—silicones, synthetic fragrances, preservatives and on and on. However, we’ll forgive them that as what’s ultimately important is whether their products meet your needs, and to that we can say the brand excels in many areas at what they do.

However, a few products are a bit on the pricey side and there are a few iffy shades and textures to consider among their foundations—noted in their respective reviews. A few caveats aside, most of Tarte's foundations, blush options, eye pencils and an ever-expanding range of innovative products demonstrate that color is what they do best.
