Review Overview

The idea of a 2-in-1 blush/bronzer is intriguing, but there's so little blush you can hardly call it a 2-in-1 product. The thimble-size amount of blush you get is housed in an attachment that screws on to the top of the bronzer tube. Still, this is a good cream blush with shine that blends well, and the coral-pink color pairs well with the coloring of the bronzer.

The fragrance-free bronzer is the best part of this product. It earns our top rating for its versatility and skin-beneficial formula. It has a very thin, silky lotion-like texture that sets to a beautiful soft matte finish (whereas the accompanying blush is sparkling, but a natural tan doesn't shine).

People with very oily skin who want an absorbent matte finish may prefer a powder to this lightweight silicone product, but Bronze & Glow Matte Bronzer is recommended for all other skin types.

The neutral light brown color is workable for most fair to medium-deep skin tones, and if more intensity is desired, the color is buildable, which makes this product great for contouring and bronzing large areas.

Pros:
  • Fragrance-free.
  • Beautiful soft matte finish; product can be used for bronzing and contouring.
  • Neutral light brown has buildable, sheer to medium intensity.
  • Includes some good antioxidants.
Cons:
  • None.

Brand Overview

Tarte Cosmetics At-A-Glance

Strengths: Excellent foundations; great cheek stain and powder blushes; superior pressed powder and eyelining pencils; good mascaras; unique, innovative, beautiful packaging; complete ingredient lists on the company's Web site.

Weaknesses: Can be pricey.

Tarte Cosmetics CEO and founder Maureen Kelly started Tarte in 1999, out of a desire to create a cosmetics line that “would prove that glamour can be good for you.” This comes in the form of products that highlight naturally-derived ingredients in their marketing campaigns, and occasionally taking swipes at the concept of synthetics in makeup.

This is ironic, as Tarte uses more than a few beneficial synthetically derived ingredients in their formulas—silicones, synthetic fragrances, preservatives and on and on. However, we’ll forgive them that as what’s ultimately important is whether their products meet your needs, and to that we can say the brand excels in many areas at what they do.

However, a few products are a bit on the pricey side and there are a few iffy shades and textures to consider among their foundations—noted in their respective reviews. A few caveats aside, most of Tarte's foundations, blush options, eye pencils and an ever-expanding range of innovative products demonstrate that color is what they do best.
