Tarte claims that this tube-packaged eyeliner was "inspired by the ease of an artist's palette." Just how easy it is to use depends on your skill level, but if you're a fan of the fluidity and precise application attributed to liquid or gel/cream liners, Tarteist Clay Paint won't disappoint. Those accustomed to pencil liners, on the other hand, may find this tricky to use, but either way, there's no denying that once you get the hang of it, the results are impressive!
The fluid gel-cream texture is dispersed through a small opening on the curved top, referred to as the "blending stage." You can use that surface to pick up or wipe off as much product as you want with the included brush (like an artist's palette). FYI: A little goes a long way, so you don't need much product. If you dispense too much liner you're essentially wasting the excess, as it's difficult to put back.
The angled-handle brush deserves mention for its thin, tapered point, which allows you to control how thick or thin a line you create. That proves especially helpful for creating a winged or cat-eye look, and the brush does a great job of depositing a rich layer of liner right along the lashline.
The fragrance-free formula applies smoothly (absolutely no tugging or skipping) and dries down to a stay-put, water-resistant finish. In fact, it's so tenacious you'll need a makeup remover to get it off completely.
The exception to this liner's durability is if you have oily eyelids or if you use moisturizing products in that area, which can cause the formula to break down, smudge, or transfer. Otherwise, the sole black shade offers deeply saturated color to boldly define eyes, and it maintains its matte finish from morning 'til night.
Overall, this liner earns a recommendation for its well-crafted brush and packaging that keeps the gel-cream texture from drying out. We also love how it glides on with ease and imparts richly pigmented stay-put color. As mentioned above, if you have oily skin or use moisturizing products near the liner area it won't wear as well, but if you don't fall into either of those categories, this is an interesting option to check out!
