Despite its happy name, The Bright Side Double-Ended Eye Brightener is a sad, dull product compared to other eye-area illuminators on the market.

Tarte's gimmicky two-sided pencil has one end labeled Day and the other Night, suggesting when each is appropriate. Although the warm, cream-colored Day illuminator is workable for most skin tones, Night is a harsh pearlescent white that is ill-advised for use at any time—day or night. The effect is simply too glaring and shiny.

Each illuminator is dispensed via a slightly pointed rubber sponge that's pre-loaded with powder. However, because the powder is packed into the cap, eventually the sponge won't be able to reach the powder—which will likely occur well before the powder is used up.

Mally Beauty's Lightwand Eye Brightener is a much better version of this product. Or, consider a product on our list of Best Highlighters.

Pros:
  • Day illuminator is workable for most skin tones (and suitable for daytime wear).
Cons:
  • Night illuminator is a harsh pearlescent white.
  • Designed poorly, packaging is prettier than it is functional.
  • Overpriced for what you get.

Brand Overview

Tarte Cosmetics At-A-Glance

Strengths: Excellent foundations; great cheek stain and powder blushes; superior pressed powder and eyelining pencils; good mascaras; unique, innovative, beautiful packaging; complete ingredient lists on the company's Web site.

Weaknesses: Can be pricey.

Tarte Cosmetics CEO and founder Maureen Kelly started Tarte in 1999, out of a desire to create a cosmetics line that “would prove that glamour can be good for you.” This comes in the form of products that highlight naturally-derived ingredients in their marketing campaigns, and occasionally taking swipes at the concept of synthetics in makeup.

This is ironic, as Tarte uses more than a few beneficial synthetically derived ingredients in their formulas—silicones, synthetic fragrances, preservatives and on and on. However, we’ll forgive them that as what’s ultimately important is whether their products meet your needs, and to that we can say the brand excels in many areas at what they do.

However, a few products are a bit on the pricey side and there are a few iffy shades and textures to consider among their foundations—noted in their respective reviews. A few caveats aside, most of Tarte's foundations, blush options, eye pencils and an ever-expanding range of innovative products demonstrate that color is what they do best.
