This mascara has a slightly wet application that can lead to smearing during application, so take it slow. The well-designed brush allows for good length and lets you build a decent amount of thickness, too. The best part of the brush is how easily it separates lashes for a clean, fringed look. Each lash is defined without clumps and once set, this has minimal tendency to flake.

This requires a silicone- or oil-based makeup remover; it doesn’t come off easily with a water-soluble cleanser alone.

Note that the claims that this mascara strengthens and repairs lashes are not supported by its formula. This contains the same basic ingredients seen in most mascaras, though it does leave lashes feeling soft.

Tarte Cosmetics claims that the Amazonian clay hydrates lashes but that’s a complete falsehood! Regardless of where it is sourced, clay absorbs oil and moisture—it doesn’t provide hydration and it cannot “nourish” lashes any more than rubbing a glass of milk over your arm will supply calcium to your bones!

Pros:
  • Equally adept at lengthening and thickening lashes (though the results aren’t prodigious).
  • Doesn’t clump and flaking during wear is minimal (if it occurs at all).
  • Leaves lashes soft rather than brittle.
Cons:
  • Expensive yet you’re not getting any extra benefits for the cost.
  • Slightly wet application can lead to smearing unless you build results slowly.

Brand Overview

Tarte Cosmetics At-A-Glance

Strengths: Excellent foundations; great cheek stain and powder blushes; superior pressed powder and eyelining pencils; good mascaras; unique, innovative, beautiful packaging; complete ingredient lists on the company's Web site.

Weaknesses: Can be pricey.

Tarte Cosmetics CEO and founder Maureen Kelly started Tarte in 1999, out of a desire to create a cosmetics line that “would prove that glamour can be good for you.” This comes in the form of products that highlight naturally-derived ingredients in their marketing campaigns, and occasionally taking swipes at the concept of synthetics in makeup.

This is ironic, as Tarte uses more than a few beneficial synthetically derived ingredients in their formulas—silicones, synthetic fragrances, preservatives and on and on. However, we’ll forgive them that as what’s ultimately important is whether their products meet your needs, and to that we can say the brand excels in many areas at what they do.

However, a few products are a bit on the pricey side and there are a few iffy shades and textures to consider among their foundations—noted in their respective reviews. A few caveats aside, most of Tarte's foundations, blush options, eye pencils and an ever-expanding range of innovative products demonstrate that color is what they do best.
