Too Faced claims HangoveRx Replenishing Face Primer creates healthy-looking skin whether worn alone or under makeup, and we agree! Not only does the formula boast of hydrating ingredients that leave skin looking and feeling fresh, it also offers soothing anti-inflammatories. This primer is especially well suited for those with combination skin because its lightweight texture offers a nice balance of absorbing comfortably while creating a smooth canvas for makeup application.
In a nod to the "Rx" part of its name, this primer comes in a medicinal-looking tube and its lotion-like texture dispenses via the pump applicator. The formula includes a hydrating mix of emollients and antioxidant-rich plant oils, yet it doesn't have a heavy finish in the least. Instead, skin is left feeling quenched but not greasy.
What about this primer's alleged superstar ingredients? The coconut-based ingredients do indeed offer moisturizing properties but the jury is still out on whether the topically applied probiotics have much benefit. There have been a couple of studies indicating probiotics in skincare products have potential as anti-inflammatory agents (Critical Reviews in Food Science Nutrition, 2015 and Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 2014), but until more research has been conducted, the potential benefits remain largely theoretical.
The only minor snag is that this primer contains a small amount of fragrance. This could be slightly iffy for those with very sensitive skin, however most should be able to use this without issue (the faint scent is hardly detectable).
All things considered, we commend Too Faced for creating a primer with a well-rounded texture to facilitate smooth makeup wear while offering skin beneficial ingredients, too. While it won't be moisturizing enough for those with very dry skin, nor is it mattifying for those who struggle with oily shine, for the skin types in between (and that's quite a lot of us), HangoveRx Replenishing Face Primer is worth checking out. Cheers to that!
- Lotion texture absorbs comfortably into skin; ideal for normal or combination skin.
- Non-greasy, hydrating formula creates a smooth surface for makeup application.
- Includes beneficial ingredients such as antioxidants for healthier skin.
- Contains fragrance, albeit a minor (almost undetectable) amount.
- The jury is still out on whether probiotics offer much benefit when applied to skin.
Hangover is a revolutionary makeup primer infused with coconut water, probiotics and skin revivers that work together to boost skin’s radiance, promote elasticity and help hydrate while locking down makeup for fresher, longer and more flawless wear. We harnessed the science of hydration to create a creamy, penetrating primer that acts like an energy drink for the skin by replenishing moisture levels. It can be worn alone for a dewy, healthy looking finish or under bronzers, foundations and powders to create the perfect canvas.

Too Faced At-A-Glance
Too Faced is the brainchild of Jerrod Blandino, who got his start in the cosmetics industry as a department store makeup artist in the '90s. According to brand lore, Blandino's clients sought him out for his lighthearted, playful approach to beauty, which led him to create his own line. Soon he teamed up with business partner Jeremy Johnson, and launched Too Faced. The brand caught on quickly, getting distribution in stores like Nordstorm and Sephora.
Too Faced's biggest hook is its emphasis on a feminine persona that seeks to make beauty seem fun. There are several food- and scent-themed palettes, and many products bear trendy or cheeky monikers. The brand offers some top-notch performers, including some great powder products and its top-selling Better Than Sex Mascara, though there are some mis-steps as well (see our individual reviews for more information).
Note: In November 2016, cosmetics giant Estee Lauder bought Too Faced for $1.45 billion. Despite the fact that Estee Lauder sells products in China, where animal testing is in some cases required by law, Too Faced's founders say they maintain their commitment to no animal testing (and there are no plans so far to sell Too Faced products in China).
