This moisturizer contains some good ingredients for dry skin, but there are lots of other moisturizers whose formulas are far more "nourishing" (which should mean a product that contains lots of great ingredients for repairing skin and making it look younger). Plus, there's a problem ingredient here that cannot be ignored: angelica root oil.

Angelica (listed by its Latin name of Angelica archangelica) oil contains chemical constituents that can be phototoxic, including bergapten, imperatorin, and xanthotoxin. Although some components of angelica oil have antioxidant ability, it is a risky ingredient to use on skin if it is exposed to sunlight (Sources: www.naturaldatabase.com; and Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, March 2007, pages 1737–1742). Given that this moisturizer contains little in the way of state-of-the-art ingredients, there's no reason to tolerate the risk angelica oil presents.

One more comment: The fact that this moisturizer is packaged in a jar won't keep the good plant-based ingredient it contains stable once open. That's a good thing because it means the angelica likely will be less of a problem—but the beneficial plant-based ingredients will have less impact, too. See More Info to learn why jar packaging is a problem.

Pros:
  • Contains some good ingredients for dry skin.
  • Inexpensive.
Cons:
  • The amount of angelic root oil poses a strong risk of irritation and damage when skin is exposed to sunlight.
  • Contains few anti-aging ingredients (though that's somewhat understandable given the price).
  • Jar packaging won't keep the best ingredients in here stable once opened.
More Info:

The fact that this product is packaged in a jar means the beneficial ingredients won't remain stable once it is opened. All plant extracts, vitamins, antioxidants, and most other state-of-the-art ingredients break down in the presence of air, so once a jar is opened and lets the air in these important ingredients begin to deteriorate. Jars also present a hygiene issue because even if you wash your hands or use a spatula to remove the product, you're introducing bacteria that causes further breakdown of key ingredients (Sources: Free Radical Biology and Medicine, September 2007, pages 818-829; Ageing Research Reviews, December 2007, pages 271-288; Dermatologic Therapy, September-October 2007, pages 314-321; International Journal of Pharmaceutics, June 12, 2005, pages 197-203; Pharmaceutical Development and Technology, January 2002, pages 1-32; International Society for Horticultural Science, www.actahort.org/members/showpdf?booknrarnr=778_5; and www.beautypackaging.com/articles/2007/03/airless-packaging.php).

Instantly replenishes moisture. Advanced Protection Factor + (APF +) technology helps skin fight against environmental stressors and all free-radical types to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while improving skin tone and texture. Contains no artificial color.

Since Ulta was founded in 1990, the company has continued to carve out a unique position as a specialty beauty store by offering a large selection of upscale and drugstore cosmetics in all price ranges, all under one roof. There are currently over 675 Ulta locations across the United States, and, like Sephora, Ulta sells its own product line right alongside more familiar brands such as Revlon, Murad, and philosophy.

The Ulta Collection offers a variety of basic makeup products, from foundation to eye shadow to lip gloss. Nearly all items in the Ulta Collection are inexpensive, and its lower price point is a major draw.

As with most cosmetics lines, Ulta has its share of good and bad products; however, it seems for every good to great makeup product the line has two average-to-poor options. Testers may or may not be available, so choose wisely.

Among the safer categories of Ulta makeup are the eyeshadows, many of the mascaras, brow products, and most of the foundations, particularly the cream-to-powder and powder formulas.

Despite our enthusiasm for Ulta's large selection of eyeshadow, the quality is inconsistent, especially when it comes to texture and how they apply, even among different shades in the same category. The best way to shop this line is to pay attention to which products we've reviewed favorably and to take extra time to play with the products in-store (assuming the Ulta you frequent keeps testers available).

In recent years, Ulta has branched out from makeup to skin care. Their namesake skin care has the same affordable price point as the makeup, and some of the products are actually quite good. Skip the cleansers, ignore the moisturizers in jar packaging, and forget about the pore-tightening products...the rest is worth exploring, but again, this is not a brand to shop without some knowledge of what you're buying and how it performs.
