Surprisingly, even though Yes To's Cucumber category is for sensitive skin it still includes fragrance. How unfortunate for those with sensitive skin who stumble onto Yes To Natural Sunscreen SPF 30 because sensitive skin is far better off without any fragrance whatsoever.

On the upside, Yes To Cucumbers Natural Sunscreen SPF 30 is an excellent all mineral-based sunscreen formula for normal to dry skin. Mineral sunscreen actives (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide which are both included) are indeed the best option for sensitive skin. This doesn't mean synthetic sunscreens aren't effective and appropriate, but they can pose a risk of irritation.

As is true for many pure mineral sunscreens such as this, it has a thick feel and leaves a white cast on skin. In terms of the whitish color it leaves behind when worn under foundation no one will be able to tell.

On the downside it does contain fragrance in the form of phenethyl alcohol and, further down the ingredient list, fragrance itself. Surprisingly, even though Yes To's Cucumber category is for sensitive skin it still includes fragrance. How unfortunate, as this is why this formula missed our top rating, as it isn't an appropriate formula for those with sensitive skin given its fragrance ingredients. We wish it could have included more in the way of beneficial ingredients and omitted the fragrance, both qualities which would have made this a truly excellent formula for sensitive skin.

Sunscreens That Lack Antioxidants: While this sunscreen goes the distance in terms of providing broad-spectrum sunscreen protection, a high SPF rating and unique aesthetics (making it one you’ll actually wear and apply liberally every day), it lacks a comprehensive array of added antioxidants. Research has demonstrated that antioxidants, when formulated into a broad-spectrum sunscreen formula, boost its effectiveness in defending your skin against UV and other environmental free radicals (Journal of Long Term Effects of Medical Implants, 2004 and Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 2012).

Thus, if you decide to try this sunscreen, we would strongly recommend you layer it over a well-formulated antioxidant rich serum. Serums are available in water-light textures for oily or combination skin, or hydrating formulas for normal to dry skin. Wearing one under your sunscreen every day will pay dividends in defending your skin against free-radical damage and inflammation that destroy the skin’s ability to heal, remain healthy and firm over time (Journal of Pathology, 2007 and Dermatology Research and Practice, 2012).

Many women (but not those who read our reviews) are completely unaware that many of the products from the so-called “natural” product lines contain just as many synthetic ingredients as “unnatural” brands. That’s no longer the case with Yes To products, but not too long ago, it was!

The Yes To brand is divided into four sub-brands: Yes To Carrots, Yes To Cucumbers, Yes To Tomatoes and Yes To Blueberries. The original launch and the largest group is Yes To Carrots. After the carrot-containing products became a hit, the company began to assemble a tossed salad of other products, including their Yes To Cucumbers, Yes To Tomatoes, and Yes to Blueberries. What next? We’re anticipating Yes To Lettuce and Yes To Blue Cheese Dressing, that way you can make a complete salad!

All kidding aside, Yes To products are worth a look if you prefer mostly natural ingredients, though not every natural ingredient Yes To uses has been proven beneficial for skin, and some are problematic. As with most natural-themed lines, there are a handful of Yes To products to consider. But few of them are state-of-the-art and there are no products to successfully manage acne or blackheads, lighten skin discolorations, or significantly reduce redness

Although it is commendable that Yes To doesn’t make over-the-top anti-aging claims, a skin-care line should help take care of skin’s daily needs, and this line’s products are somewhat lacking. All the fruits, vegetables, and any natural ingredient you can name isn’t enough to protect skin from the cumulative damage of unprotected sun exposure (the Yes To brand does sell a couple of excellent sunscreens) or to satisfy other skin-care needs. It’s a nice idea to think that tomatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, and blueberries are as good for your skin when applied topically as they are for your health when consumed as part of a healthy diet, but that’s simply not the case. Still, if you shop this line carefully you’ll come away with some workable products that are pleasant to use.
