Overview

If there's one thing Anastasia Beverly Hills knows, it's brow makeup– and it has another winner on its hands with Dipbrow Pomade.

This cream/gel hybrid comes in a glass jar with a screw top lid. It isn't waxy or hard at all – it has a consistency that's quite soft and easy to pick up on your brow brush of choice. It takes little effort to apply, and you only need a very small amount to get good color deposit (we found one dip of our brush into the pomade was enough to provide color for both brows, with product to spare).

Dipbrow wears well throughout the day without fading or smudging, and keeps brows soft (and more natural-looking) during its impressive wear time. It comes in a good range of shades for blonde, auburn, and dark brows – with the darker shades being able to do double duty as gel eyeliner (though if you opt to use this product as eyeliner, make sure you use a different brush than you did for the brows).

Pros:
  • Soft, creamy consistency makes this easy to pick up with a brush.
  • Applies smoothly, and you only need a little to get a lot of color.
  • Wears well without fading or smudging.
  • Brows remain soft throughout its wear time.
  • Darker shades can be used as a long-wearing gel eyeliner.
Cons:
  • None.

Anastasia Beverly Hills At-a-Glance

Strengths: Specialized brow products; top-notch brow powders with an impressive shade range; great brow pen and tinted brow gel; one excellent powder blush; good brushes and products for taming unruly brows; a couple good starter kits for those new to brow grooming.

Weaknesses: Expensive; horrible brow pencil; some of the kits mix really bad products with good ones; mediocre skin care; subpar mascara; the lip gloss is merely OK; products that don’t live up to their claims (though that’s hardly unique to this line).

The Anastasia Beverly Hills product line was developed by "definitive eyebrow expert" Anastasia Soare, a woman who owns a chic Beverly Hills salon. Her namesake product line is built around specialty brow products and shaping tools based on her criteria. Although she has expanded the line to include skin-care and other makeup items, the brow products remain the heart of the line; the skin care seems to be little more than an afterthought.

What sets the Anastasia line apart is the wide selection of brow-grooming products and their impressive shade range for natural-looking brows. Overall, the line is a mixture of both good and bad products, at a relatively high price point. We were expecting to find great brow pencils from a line devoted to perfecting the eyebrow, but Anastasia failed miserably with their extremely hard-textured Perfect Brow Pencil.

Their skin-care products also rank low in terms of efficacy and high in terms of misleading claims, and the mascara misses the mark completely. There are a few so-so makeup products you can ignore, and some of the brow kits have a frustrating mix of good products and awful products.

On the flip side, what's great about Anastasia Beverly Hills are their fabulous brow powders, good brushes, brow-taming products, and some helpful products such as Brow Fix, Brow Pen, and Tinted Brow Gel. They also have a beautiful Blush Quad and a couple of good highlighter pencils. Many of the products cater to those who are new to brow shaping (including a brow stencil set), and, depending on your local department store, you may even be able to schedule an appointment with an Anastasia brow specialist who can show you the way, following the namesake company founder's famous Golden Ratio. For more information about Anastasia Beverly Hills, call (800) 310-3773 or visit www.anastasia.net.

Beware of the darker shades

If you are a dark-skinned African-American, beware of the dark shades. They look lovely in the container, but look gray on my skin which in turn makes my brows look ashy/ gray. I don't have this issue with the pencils in this line.

This, I can do!

I've tried every blonde brow pencil and powder under the sun. Dipbrow Pomade is my HG. My eyebrows are sparse and somehow this looks natural. My brow brush becomes a razor edge with the pomade. Now I easily draw the bottom of the brow, a top line, fill it in and CREATE AN ARCH. The texture allows me to push the color into place, creating a realistic beginning to the brow and, with a sharp edge, a tail that is sharp and not a wooly caterpillar. No more fear and trepidation applying brow makeup.

Silver-white-haired women DO have eyebrows, you know.

As a middle-aged woman with completely silver-white hair, I've yet to find any brow pencil that doesn't look completely fake on me. This includes you too, Paula. My brows are still dark (I started turning grey at 16.) All the taupe pencils are way too brown; grey eyeliner pencils are WAY too dark or so shiny they look ridiculous; eyeshadows are too dark, too shiny, or don't last. With the aging population, cosmetics companies are dropping the ball on this.

Yes, It Lasts

Pot is WAY too generous, will never ever finish it. Love that it lasts; brows are important to an overall look. I have dark ash brows, but the Dark Brown is too dark and the Auburn is too red (imagine Blonde is too light). I wish they had more natural colours. Paula had an old gel liner pot that was perfect on me, except it didn't last on my face and it dried out right away making it difficult to apply. I'm hoping for something better to turn up. Great product - if the colour works on you.

perfect and natural looking

Love this stuff...I would recommend buying the double ended brush from Anastasia for the best application. One end has a spoolie which is essential to use after application for a perfect natural looking brow. This stuff wears perfectly all day and looks sooo much better than pencil and lasts longer than powder...which tends to fade throughout the day on my dark brows. The price, $18, isnt bad considering that the jar will last forever.

Not so good

I found out that it clogged my pores around my eyebrows. Even though I would use it only at a night out and would remove it properly with a makeup remover followed by proper cleansing, toning and exfoliating, I would get huge zits on that area. I stopped using it and tried the brow powder duo by the same brand but got the same bad results. I won't buy Anastasia Beverly Hills again because getting me to breakout twice is already enough for me.
