Despite their typically over-exaggerated claims, BB creams often hold no advantage over other foundations or tinted moisturizers. Here's the scoop: Most BB creams are little more than tinted moisturizers, often with sunscreen. Many include some beneficial ingredients that may or may not be present in tinted moisturizers, but that's where the excitement stops.

BB creams hold no advantage in terms of multi-tasking beyond what the best tinted moisturizers with sunscreen provide. And despite their names, they're not particularly beneficial for blemishes (think acne, red marks, white bumps, etc.). BB creams from East Asian brands tend to be thicker and offer more coverage while those from Western brands tend to be sheerer, but again there's nothing particularly special about their formulas.

In this case, the fragrance-free formula truly does contain beneficial skin-repairing ingredients, antioxidants, as well as broad-spectrum sun protection (a mix of synthetic and mineral-based sunscreen ingredients) for an added anti-aging benefit. Unfortunately, the performance doesn't quite match up.

Double Wear All Day Glow BB provides longer wear than most BB creams, but on the flipside, the creamy texture doesn't go on as smooth as you'd expect and requires quick blending before it sets. Although Lauder describes this as lightweight, it can feel occlusive and greasy on skin, and the "glow" finish is more dewy than luminous. Overall the moisturizing formula is best suited for normal to dry skin.

The shade range is hit or miss; those with fair skin will find even the lightest shade (1.0) too dark and the undertones of peach and orange to be unflattering. The other shades are more neutral with options for medium-dark skin tones.

If you can find a suitable shade, this is an OK option to consider but given there are better (and less expensive)

BB creams on the market, why settle?

Pros:
  • Fragrance-free.
  • Contains beneficial skin-repairing ingredients and antioxidants.
  • Reliable broad-spectrum sun protection for an added anti-aging benefit.
Cons:
  • Creamy texture doesn't go on as smooth as you'd expect.
  • Can feel occlusive and greasy on skin.
  • The lightest shade is too dark for fair skin and also has unflattering undertones.

Brand Overview

Estee Lauder At-A-Glance

The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.

The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.

When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
